Earthenware, tin-glazed creamy-white on both sides, more thickly than elsewhere round the remains of the foot. Painted in blue, several shades of green, yellow, and brown, with manganese outlines.
Circular with narrow rim and wide, shallow centre; the whole slightly warped. In the middle of the underside there is a circular depression containing the remains of a foot.
The Judgement of Paris. The three scantily draped goddesses are in the foreground, Juno and Venus standing and Minerva kneeling beside her armour. Further back on a hill, Paris, dressed as a shepherd, is seated with his bagpipes resting on his knee, holding in his right hand an apple inscribed `pulcrior/l.donu' (a gift for the more beautiful). A dog lies at his feet. The landscape background is filled with gambolling goats and sheep, and a horse. On the rim there is a border of stylised leaves between pairs of blue bands. The edge is green.no cataloguereferenceexhibition-1605adlib-exhibition-160504d3c358-0bef-3d8f-8df5-14f16987ac1bItalian Maiolica in the Fitzwilliam MuseumC.2230-19281accession numberC.2230-192873268priref73268old object number4801urihttps://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/73268https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/73268when purchased the dish bore a label from a Christie's sale catalogue156 A flat tazza, without foot painted in different colours, crudely painted with the judgement of Paris who sits with an apple inscribed "Pulchrior/l dono" on a hill with cattle grazing; in the front two goddesses standing and one kneeling, the armour of Minerva lying on the ground.
