The figures stand in front of a tree stump on a high stony and mossy mound, rising from a rectangular base with a yellow edge, which is hollow underneath. The older boy stands with his feet well apart, and holds a bird's nest in both hands at chest level. He looks back over his right shoulder towards a smaller boy who reaches up to his shoulder in an attempt to reach the bird's nest. The older boy has a black hat over his brown hair. He wears a white shirt, a pale red waistcoat, a brown coat, blue breeches, white stockings and black shoes with buckles. The younger boy has pale greyish-brown hair, and wears a white shirt, a pale green waistcoat, and red breeches. His legs and feet are bare.
