object type: Pale buff earthenware, tin-glazed, and painted in blue. The hand-warmer or flask is in the shape of a closed book with two clasps.  It has a small round hole in the upper left corner of one cover. When the book is stood on end, it has a rectangular aperture in the top edge which extends down to the bottom inside the spine, which has four horizontal ridges its exterior.  The covers are painted overall withscattered  stylized flowers and foliage, possibly in Oriental style, all rather blurred. The edges of the pages are sponged and on the fore-edge have an inscription in darker blue: M  17: 09  D
