They usually have one or two handles and were made in a range of materials. This Dutch Delftware example is unusual because it also has a short spout and cover. This suggests that it may have been made to serve posset, a comforting beverage made from hot cream frothed up with egg yolk, alcohol, sugar, and spices. A common remedy for the sick in early modern Europe, posset was served from pots with long spouts to suck out the alcohol, two handles to ensure a steady grip, and a cover to keep the contents warm."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107764","uid":"adlib-term-107764","uuid":"0d6ecfb5-e150-385d-8b76-979bcf2adc8c"},"summary_title":"1790s"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-116978","uid":"adlib-term-116978","uuid":"92fb81a3-a19f-3b12-9dfa-af13739f0b10"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"United Provinces of the Netherlands"}],"summary_title":"United Provinces of the Netherlands","type":"country"}]],"summary_title":"Makkum"}]}]},"materials":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-39575","uid":"adlib-term-39575","uuid":"cdf6707a-1eeb-3622-a26b-6e54f1f8d4ab"},"summary_title":"tin-glaze"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","units":"cm","value":"15.2"},{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"12.1"},{"dimension":"Width","units":"cm","value":"16.5"}]},"multimedia":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-41632","uid":"adlib-media-41632","uuid":"7ec17e8b-6820-35a3-85a5-8246a55cf23a"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa9\/C_2783_20_26_20A_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583010611,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa9\/mid_C_2783_20_26_20A_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":649},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1742583010611,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa9\/C_2783_20_26_20A_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583010611,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa9\/preview_C_2783_20_26_20A_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":325},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1742583010611,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"0","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-41633","uid":"adlib-media-41633","uuid":"4e1015bb-f9bf-3c00-b949-c4addef5d464"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa9\/C_2783_20_26_20A_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583019067,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa9\/mid_C_2783_20_26_20A_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":649},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1742583019067,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa9\/C_2783_20_26_20A_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583019067,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa9\/preview_C_2783_20_26_20A_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":325},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1742583019067,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"1","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}}],"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-90185","uid":"adlib-term-90185","uuid":"3f875043-b10a-3d2d-9100-b380c7afcddd"},"summary_title":"porringer"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107478","uid":"adlib-term-107478","uuid":"81002e74-5083-37b8-a429-4a303fc40695"},"summary_title":"cover"}}],"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"Mr Withers, Silver Street, Leicester, from whom purchased for \u00a31.2s. 0d. at an unknown date by Dr J.W.L.
