He was the son of Thomas George of Bath, and was educated at King Edward's Grammar School. He practised as a surgeon in Bath for many years. In 1827 he was appointed one of the surgeons to the Bath General Mineral Water Hospital and in 1828 was made a governor of that institution. He resigned as surgeon in 1860. He was chosen to be a member of the old Common council of the city in 1833 and in April of the same year served the office of chief constable. In 1852 he was appointed a trustee of King Edward's Grammar School. He resigned on leaving Bath. He was on the Board of Directors of the West of England Bank until ill health obliged him to retire. George was born on 1 January 1838. He was educated at Winchester College, and in 1856 gained a Fellowship at New College Oxford; BA 1860, MA 1862. Called to the bar 1864 and practised as a barrister until 1867, when he returned to New College to teach law and history. In 1868 he was ordained but never undertook parish duties. From 1872 when law and history separated at Oxford, he became college tutor for history until 1891. He wrote mainly on military history and the relationship between geography and history, and was a staunch supporter of the British Empire. From 1860 he was also a keen mountaineer and joined the Alpine Club in 1861. In 1866 he published 'The Oberland and its Glaciers'. He was a director of the West of England and South Wales Bank at Bristol but took no active part in its running. When the Bank failed in 1880 he lost money and was involved in an abortive trial of the directors for irregularities in the keeping of accounts. In 1873 he married Alice Bourdillon (d. 1893) and had two sons.
