The rectangular base has straight sides and is painted to resemble black and white variegated marble. On the viewer's right there is a brown column decorated with reliefs, on which there is a pile of three books. Milton stands on his right leg with his left advanced. His head is turned to his right, and he rests his left lower arm on the top of the books, and holds his right arm across his body. In his left hand he holds an unrolled scroll. He has long brown hair and wears a dark yellow jacket, reddish-brown breeches, white stockings and black shoes.
