The standing shepherd and his seated dog are on a rocky base with a tree stump at the back, supported on a low square plinth. The underside is open and has a circular ventilation hole under the figure. The shepherd stands on his right leg with his left relaxed at the knee. His head and body are turned slightly to his right, and he holds up his right hand to hold a crook, now missing. His left hand is extended a little way in front of him. His face and hands are dull pink, and he has a dark brown hat with a turned up brim at the front, and two feathers attached to the left side of the crown. He wears a bluish-white shirt and waistcoat, a brown coat, pale yellow breeches, bluish-white stockings and dark brown shoes. There are remnants of gilding on the buttons and buttonholes of his coat, and the ties of his left shoe.
