The circular basin has deep sides curving inwards above the foot. The cover is almost flat, with a flange underneath which fits inside the basin, and has a capstan-shaped knob. One side is decorated with two rows of three ships (possibly representing the six ships that Admiral Vernon won the battle with), with the top row facing right, and the bottom left. On the other side, in the centre, is a scene of a harbour and buildings, with three small ships below this, and a larger ship below these. Flanking this scene are two large ships, which themselves are flanked by two figures of Admiral Vernon, which face towards each other. At the top and bottom of the basin is a rouletted border, imitating rope-work. The lid is decorated with four ships, with the same rouletted border, around the rim and finial, as the basin. object type: white salt-glazed stoneware decorated with reliefs depicting the capture of Portobello, Admiral Vernon, and ships title: sugar bowl NOTES ----- type: history note value: Arthur Edward Clarke Collection ; sold Sotheby's 18-20 June 1919, lot 98 ; bought by Mr Stoner, on behalf of Dr Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Applied Arts collection: J.
