DESCRIPTIVE DATA

object type: Buff earthenware tobacco jar, tin-glazed overall, except for the outer edge of the base, and painted in blue. The ovoid jar has a short, everted neck, the centre of the base slightly concave. On the front is a view of a quay with, a seated European man seated in the middle, a native American man standing holding a pipe with his back to the viewer beside a barrel on the left, and on the right, another barrel and a sack. Behind them are the masts and rigging of a ship. On each side there is a curved palm, and below, in a panel 'HAVANA' with two horizontal palm fronds below. The jar has a circular ebonized wood cover with sloping sides and slightly domed top (not the original cover).
