    <value>White earthenware figure moulded in three parts with separately moulded arms and right leg, and lead glazed. Painted underglaze in cobalt blue and in black, brown, green, orange, red and flesh-pink enamels, and gilt.</value>
  </description>
  <description>
    <value>The man stands, resting his right elbow on a column and crossing his right leg over his left. The figure is well coloured. He wears: a long blue coat jacket; black and white striped trousers; a white shirt and waistcoat, edged in black; black shoes; an orange striped scarf; and a broad-brimmed white hat with a long pink feather. The pillar is square, green in the middle and brown at the top and bottom; attached beside is a plain white support for the figure&#x2019;s legs. The oval base has a gilt line across the front, its ends turn down to the bottom. The top is moulded to suggest rough ground, but unpainted. The back is partly moulded and decorated. The underside is concave and glazed, with a vent hole towards the left.</value>

      <note>
        <value>The figure is probably literary or theatrical, but is as yet unidentified.</value>
      </note>
      <note>
        <value>The moulding and partial decoration of the back of this figure suggests it may have been made in the 1840s. The Dudson factory was founded in 1800 and at this time operated in Hope Street, Hanley, making a wide range of products; between c.1815 and 1865 they made a large number of both porcelain and earthenware figures. John and Rebecca Lloyd made both earthenware and porcelain figures at Shelton between 1834 and 1852. Figures from these factories are notable for the high standard of their decoration, and this figure shares some of the features of figures they are known to have made, notably the complex moulding with several subsidiary parts and the well-fired use of enamel colours. However, there were also many other manufacturers of Staffordshire figures at this time.</value>
