DESCRIPTIVE DATA

object type: White earthenware transfer-printed underglaze in blue.  This nine-sided dish has seven slightly scalloped edges and two deeply scalloped right-hand edges, to which the twisted shell handles are attached.  There is a small, indented rim to the top of each indented edge, deep sides and a flat centre.  The dish stands on three, moulded, spiral feet.  Decorated with a small, uneven, nine-sided medallion enclosing a seated figure holding a leafed branch or wand and a standing, female figure turning away, reserved in a blue ground and bordered by a circle of four-petalled flowers between two scalloped lines.  The deep rim is decorated with two urns, to the north and south of the medallion and two shaped reserves, to the east and west, each featuring classical scenes.  The spaces between the urns and reserves are decorated with fruit and flowers, all reserved in a blue ground.
