The figures are supported on a square straight-sided base which is concave underneath, and has two ventilation holes on the left near the back. Ganymede stands beside a tall tree stump on the viewer's left. The eagle stands in front ot it, and looks up towards him. He holds out a drinking bowl in his left hand and rests his right arm on the top of the tree stump. He has brown hair, and wears a greenish-yellow Phrygian cap, a short pink tunic and a short pink cloak with a yellow lining, the end of which is draped over the top of the tree stump. The eagle is painted naturalistically in shades of brown with a black beak and yellow legs; the tree stump is dappled in green and brown, and the base is marbled in shades of yellow ochre and brown with darker brown veining. Thomas Lakin and John Ellison Poole entered into partnership in 1791, and in 1795 were joined by Poole's brother-in-law, Thomas Shrigley. Thomas Lakin withdrew from the partnership in January 1796 and a year later the other partners were declared bankrupt.
