Tjhe couple are depicted in an unaffected manner, as if the young man had decided to propose on a stroll in tjhe garden, or on their way home from church or chapel. The stylized tree behind them, known as bocage (a grove) was derived from eighteenth-century porcelain figures. It was a feature of figures by John Walton, who was baptized in 1780, and was listed as a potter in local directories from 1818 to 1835. 'Perswaition' can be attributed to Walton because strictly comparable groups exist marked 'WALTON' impressed or in relief on a raised scroll.
