object type: Dark buff stoneware, thrown, with impressed, and applied moulded decoration, partly covered with brown iron wash and salt-glazed. The oviform body contracts at the top into a short neck with cordons round the mouth, and has a small thick loop handle with a broad extension pressed into the body at its lower end. A bearded face mask is applied to the front of the neck, and lower down below it, is an applied moulded rosette. On the shoulders to the right and left of the mask there is an impressed heart-shaped motif. The glaze exhibits the 'orange peel' effect typical of salt-glazing, and the wash has run down in dribbles on the handle side.
