object type: Buff stoneware, thrown and turned, with incised and applied moulded relief decoration, and salt-glaze The bulbous mug stands on a cylindrical foot with horizontal turned bands, and has a short cylindrical neck, with turned bands and a more pronounced cordon level with the upper junction of the handle, which is missing. Part of the kick at its lower end projects from the side. On the front is a large stylized rose with on either side, an incised spray bearing smaller roses, dotted leaves, and other flowers extending towards the handle.

value: Cambridge; found in 1897 in Christ's Lane, beneath some old cottages in a well by the side of an old clunch wall; the find site was recorded as No. 20 in a notebook recording the pottery finds of Mr S.J. Freeman; bought from Mr Freeman about 1900 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambrdge.
