The jug stands on three rustic feet. The bulbous body contracts into a short neck and flares upwards and outwards towards the notched rim which is elongated at the front to form a lip. The crabstock handle rises up from the rim and then downwards in a single loop until it meets the widest part of the body. Sprays of flowers and leaves sprout from the junctions of the legs and handle with the body. Encircling the body just above the legs and below the rim is an bluish-green zone, each decorated with a wavy continuous stem of gilt leaves flanked by gilt horizontal bands. Between these zones the ground is white. Under the spout is a motif comprising two intersecting vertical zig-zag lines of polychrome flowers and leaves, repeated three times more round the body, and alternating with a similar motif comprising intersecting zig-zag lines of pink and blue ribbons, the diamond-shapes between filled with a gold diaper pattern, and the ribbons outlined with gold dots. There are touches of gilding on the feet and handle, and on the relief flowers and leaves. object type: Three-legged milk jug of soft-paste porcelain painted in polychrome enamels with a trellis pattern, and gilded title: milk jug NOTES ----- type: history note value: Unknown before donor, Ralph Hare Griffin (1854-1941) LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Applied Arts collection: Ralph Griffin creditline: Given by Ralph Griffin, MA, FSA STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/86629 TECHNIQUES ---------- Soft-paste porcelain, painted in enamels, and gilded. moulding TECHNIQUES ---------- lead-glazing CATEGORIES ------ category: soft-paste porcelain DATING ------ creation date: 1770 - 1770 creation date earliest: 1770 creation date latest: 1770 culture: 18th Century culture: Louis XVI CREATORS -------- maker: Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory maker: Le Bel, jeune CITATIONS -------- Alumni cantabrigienses: a biographical list of all known students, graduates and holders of office at the University of Cambridge, from the earliest times to 1900 Obituary Notices, Ralph Hare Griffin The James A. de Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor, Sèvres Porcelain The Wallace Collection, Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain --- IMAGES surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa23/C_196_1918.jpg height: 760 pixels width: 507 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa23/mid_C_196_1918.jpg height: 750 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa23/C_196_1918.jpg height: 760 pixels width: 507 pixels surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa23/preview_C_196_1918.jpg height: 375 pixels width: 250 pixels surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/436/613/large_C_196_1918_1_200901_mfj22_mas.jpg height: 1536 pixels width: 1024 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/436/613/mid_C_196_1918_1_200901_mfj22_mas.jpg height: 750 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/C.196-1918_1_200901_mfj22_mas.tif surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/436/613/preview_C_196_1918_1_200901_mfj22_mas.jpg height: 375 pixels width: 250 pixels surrogate: zoom format: pyramid tiff location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/436/613/C_196_1918_1_200901_mfj22_mas.ptif height: 4992 pixels width: 3328 pixels
