The first recorded sale of a plateau carre ‘ a jour’with pierced sides was made to the marchand-mercier, Lazare Duvaux between July 1757 and January 1758. This is the first size, and may have been sold with a cup or a cup and saucer as a dejeuner. These have rarely survived together. The Reverend William Cole, who was in Paris in 1765, went with Horace Walpole to Poirier's shop where the latter paid '10 Louis or Guineas for a single Coffee Cup, Saucer, & a little square Sort of soucoupe, or under-Saucer, to set them on; they were indeed the highest finished Things of the Kind that can be conceived: perfect Jewels that deserve to be set in gold Frames to be admired & looked at, but never to be used for Fear of breaking them.' Rose grounds were first recorded in 1758 but appear on pieces with date letters for 1757, and 1756. They were popular until 1762 and then again between 1772-5. The pink trellis pattern on this tray was described by the factory as ‘rose mosaique’.This tray does not bear a painter's mark but the landscape in the centre is similar in style to one on a rectangular tray with a different rose trellis ground, and date letter for 1757-8, painted by Edmé Goméry, now in the British Museum (See Documentation, Sotheby's 10 December, 1936, and Dawson 1994)referenceterm-106496adlib-term-106496bd563695-7339-3178-a8c4-25189907099318th Century, Mid#referenceterm-15538adlib-term-15538e4001da7-ed48-3271-a6fb-c7f54095a1adLouis XVreferenceterm-113750adlib-term-1137509c94e435-9cde-38f2-b190-3a9ff2a77005literalFranceFrancecountrySèvresreferenceterm-107733adlib-term-10773300160189-e3ce-3796-a88b-5aa8d6c808c4lead-glazereferenceterm-37637adlib-term-3763789b09133-dc0a-3a88-bd40-5aef1ad30ecbsoft-paste porcelainHeightcm2.8Lengthcm14.9Widthcm14.9referencemedia-67064adlib-media-670649b4d9d03-1380-3c2c-b272-dfd92c2bc28fjpegaa/aa23/C_15_1961_20_281_29.jpg1heightpixels760widthpixels50716162686054741imagejpegaa/aa23/mid_C_15_1961_20_281_29.jpg1heightpixels750widthpixels50016162686054741imagejpegaa/aa23/C_15_1961_20_281_29.jpg1heightpixels760widthpixels50716162686054741imagejpegaa/aa23/preview_C_15_1961_20_281_29.jpg1heightpixels375widthpixels25016162686054741image0media
