The rectangular areas at the junctions of the double Y-shaped stretcher are inlaid with tulips and foliage in ebony. The lower parts of the legs taper to square feet. He trained as an architect and entered Philip Webb's office in 1880. By 1890 he was the chief furniture-designer for Morris & Company, and in 1900 he took over Webb's practice. This table was one of his earliest designs for the firm, but it remained available to order at least until c. 1910, when it was advertised in either mahogany or Italian walnut, £30 without inlay or £45 with inlay (stock no. 557; catalogue, p. 27). This table was made for Alexander Alexander Ionides, of 1 Holland Park, who was charged £38 in March 1880. The bill survives in the Victoria & Albert Museum.
