Xanto frequently constructed the scenes on his dishes with figures taken from several different engraved sources. The scene from the story of Ulysses and Circe was constructed from four. Ulysses was derived from 'Jupiter', dated 1528, by the Monogrammist IB. The figure also resembles Perseus in the woodcut illustration of Perseus and Andromeda in 'Ouidio methamorphoseos vulgare', Venice (Lucantonio Giunta), 1497. Circe was taken from the Muse Euterpe in the engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi of Raphael's 'Parnassus'. The two servants were adapted and transposed from the servants at the banquet given in Aeneas' honour by Dido, in the lowest right panel of the 'Quos Ego' engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi. The man with a swine's head in the foreground was probably derived from a figure in the 'Battle of the Romans and Carthaginians' engraved by Marco Dente after Raphael or Giulio Romano."},{"value":"This plate belongs to a service made for a member of the Pucci family of Florence, which comprises a salt, thirty-four dishes dated 1532, and two dishes dated 1533. The plate is decorated with the story of Ulysses and Circe which is told in Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book XIV, 248-307, the incident portrayed on the dish in lines 293-8. Circe had transformed Ulysses' companions into swine after giving them poisoned wine at a feast in her palace. Only one, Eurylochus, refrained from drinking and escaped to tell Ulysses. When the latter arrived at the palace he refused the poisoned cup offered by Circe and threatened her with his sword. Then, having made a marriage pact with her, he demanded as a wedding gift that she return his companions to their rightful forms. This subject also occurs on a dish of 1533 in the Louvre, which has the same figures of Ulysses and Circe, but is otherwise rendered differently."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120009","uid":"adlib-term-120009","uuid":"690a6332-cfc1-3411-a716-4dd4ec7d9a65"},"summary_title":"16th Century, second Suspended from the tree there is a shield of testa di cavallo form charged with the impresa of gold rods in a crucible surrounded by flames in a blue ground. The edge is yellow. On the back there is a narrow yellow band round the base and a wider band on the edge."}],"exhibitions":[{"@link":{"catalogue":"No. 136","type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"exhibition-1607","uid":"adlib-exhibition-1607","uuid":"067f0641-1c25-3855-871f-ee848d69bdc9"},"summary_title":"Splendours of the Gonzaga"},{"@link":{"catalogue":"no catalogue","type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"exhibition-1605","uid":"adlib-exhibition-1605","uuid":"04d3c358-0bef-3d8f-8df5-14f16987ac1b"},"summary_title":"Italian Maiolica in the Fitzwilliam Museum"},{"@link":{"catalogue":"211","type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"exhibition-2376","uid":"adlib-exhibition-2376","uuid":"3e2208a0-ad25-3b64-b03f-cb63aa00fd02"},"summary_title":"Treasured Possessions from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"exhibition-3944","uid":"adlib-exhibition-3944","uuid":"efb64902-4239-3ac6-accf-83ab547bb095"},"summary_title":"National Treasures: Botticelli in Cambridge"}],"identifier":[{"accession_number":"EC.30-1938","primary":true,"type":"accession number","value":"EC.30-1938"},{"priref":"47188","type":"priref","value":"47188"},{"type":"uri","uri":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/47188","value":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/47188"}],"inscription":[{"description":[{"value":"Rectangular with cut corners, printed in black `UNION\/CENTRALE' and inscribed in faded black ink with `155\/3657' between the two words"}],"location":"on the back","method":"printed in black and inscribed in faded black ink","transcription":[{"value":"'UNION\/1555\/3657\/CENTRALE'"}],"type":"label"}],"institutions":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"legal":{"credit_line":"Purchased with the Glaisher fund"},"lifecycle":{"acquisition":[{"agents":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-150858","uid":"adlib-agent-150858","uuid":"d36d1847-4d6a-33eb-974b-f4b061db49f9"},"summary_title":"Sotheby's"}],"date":[{"earliest":1938,"latest":1938,"value":"1938-06-16"}],"method":{"value":"bought"},"note":[{"value":"accession date was given as the date of the sale, not of the Syndicate"}]}],"creation":[{"date":[{"earliest":1524,"from":{"earliest":1524,"era":["CE"],"latest":1524,"precision":"circa","value":"1524"},"latest":1525,"range":true,"to":{"earliest":1525,"era":["CE"],"latest":1525,"value":"1525"}}],"maker":[{"@link":{"role":[{"value":"painter"}],"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-99016","uid":"adlib-agent-99016","uuid":"d1d63237-ac23-350a-897d-50f3369e87e8"},"summary_title":"Nicola di Gabriele Sbraghe da Urbino"}],"note":[{"value":"The potter, Nicola di Gabriele Sbraghe, known as Nicola da Urbino, was a workshop owner in Urbino from at least 1520 until his death at the end of 1537 or in January 1538. He was also a brilliant maiolica painter, whose work has been identified by comparison with five pieces of istoriato maiolica monogrammed or signed by him. Nicola painted in an exquisitely delicate manner, and was unusually imaginative in his adaptation of printed sources and in the creation of architectural and landscape backgrounds. His output of the 1520s, which includes several armorial services, is regarded as the acme of maiolica decoration."},{"value":"This exquisite dish formed part of a service which belonged to Isabella d'Este (1474-1539), widow of Francesco Gonzaga, fourth Marchese of Mantua (1466-1519). It was made between 1522 and 1525, and may have been the service given to Isabella probably in November 1524 by her daughter, Eleanora, Duchess of Urbino, who thought that she might like to use it in her villa at Porto near Mantua. Twenty-two dishes and one fragmentary dish are known, two decorated with biblical scenes and the rest with subjects from classical mythology or history. Each dish also bears the arms of Gonzaga impaling Este, and one or more of Isabella's imprese (a device or emblem) or her initials YS intertwined. On this dish the arms are surrounded by bianco sopra bianco decoration, and the rim is decorated with the story of Peleus and Thetis from Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book XI. Having found the sea goddess Thetis asleep on the shore, Peleus entreated her to make love, but she refused and escaped by transforming herself into different forms. After praying to the sea god Proteus for advice, Peleus successfully overcame the goddess's scruples and she conceived the ill-fated hero, Achilles. Nicola based the figures on a woodcut illustration in Giovanni dei Bonsignori's Ovidio methamorphoseos vulgare, Venice (Giovanni Rosso da Vercelli for Lucantonio Giunta), 1497 or a later edition. Two imprese are shown: `XXVII' sounding like vinti s\u00e8te, (you are defeated), and gold bars in a crucible, which Isabella's husband adopted in 1495 to signify his integrity after successfully withstanding an accusation of treachery."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-134567","uid":"adlib-term-134567","uuid":"cb330736-31a5-3937-b99b-30a434c36c22"},"summary_title":"1520s"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-10618","uid":"adlib-term-10618","uuid":"9ebc0ae1-8cf8-312b-832c-9cf44da02136"},"summary_title":"Renaissance"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-110708","uid":"adlib-term-110708","uuid":"ef038505-1555-3c61-b6e2-cadcedf6c42a"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"Italy"}],"summary_title":"Italy","type":"country"}]],"summary_title":"Urbino"}]}]},"materials":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-39575","uid":"adlib-term-39575","uuid":"cdf6707a-1eeb-3622-a26b-6e54f1f8d4ab"},"summary_title":"tin-glaze"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"3.9"}]},"multimedia":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-187308","uid":"adlib-media-187308","uuid":"4f5247e5-9bd4-331c-a823-07712f3034fc"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":1021},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":1024}]},"modified":1702926403667,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/mid_EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":499},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1702926403667,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":1021},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":1024}]},"modified":1702926403667,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/preview_EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":249},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1702926403667,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"0","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-1839422729","source":"portfolio","uid":"portfolio-media-1839422729","uuid":"e48eb84d-6cf2-3eec-826f-91f082127699"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"portfolio\/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C\/432\/996\/large_EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":768},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":1024}]},"modified":1529198924000,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"portfolio\/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C\/432\/996\/mid_EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":375},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1529198924000,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"location":"EC.30-1938_201407_kly25_mas.tif","modified":1529198924000,"processed":true,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"portfolio\/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C\/432\/996\/preview_EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":188},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1529198924000,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"zoom":{"format":"pyramid During that period he marked or signed numerous dishes and panels, many of which are also inscribed with their subject and its literary source. Xanto's reference on the back of this dish to canto 37 (stanzas 25-9) of Orlando Furioso, shows that he used the first edition, published in 1516 and reprinted in 1521, 1524, and each year until 1531. In the second edition of 1532 and subsequent editions, the action takes place in canto 41 (stanzas 25-9). These editions had no illustrations to serve as a basis for the illustration on the dish. So Xanto followed his usual practice of constructing a scene with figures taken from prints, in this case just one, the Abduction of Helen, engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi after Raphael. The first illustrated Orlando Furioso with a simple woodcut to each canto had been published in 1530, but it was not until 1542 that really lively illustrations appeared in the edition by Gabrielli Giolito de' Ferrari of Venice."},{"value":"This is one of thirty-six dishes surviving from a service bearing the arms of a member of the Pucci family of Florence. Thirty-four are dated 1532 and two, 1533. The identity of the owner of the service is uncertain. Piero Maria Pucci of Florence (b. 1467) is one member of the family who has been suggested. Another was Roberto Pucci, whose wife having died in 1526, entered the Church, becoming Bishop of Pistoia in 1541, and a Cardinal in 1542, after which he impaled the Farnese arms with Pucci. He died aged eighty-three in 1547. Most of the dishes are decorated with scenes from classical mythology or history, but this dish and another in the British Museum differ in having scenes from one of the greatest romantic epic poems, Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533). The action shown on the Fitzwilliam's dish takes place after the hero, Ruggiero, had abandoned his ship in a storm off the coast of Egypt, leaving on board his horse, Frontino, his armour and his magic sword, Belisarda. These were found by a Christian warrior, Orlando, who took the sword for himself, and distributed the armour and horse to his companions, Oliviero, and Brandimarte, in preparation for a battle with a
