The animals and verses were copied from an undated broadsheet ballad, 'The Alomode Dress, or the Maidens Mode Admir'd and Continued by the Ape, Owl and Mistris Puss' of which an example is in the Folger Shakespeare Library, in Washington DC. The painter changed the face of the cat, which is female in the ballad, to a leonine more masculine face, and missed out two very small animals in the background. The animals are wearing headdresses made of pleated ribbons with lace cornets hanging down on either side of their faces, and the owl and ape have short capes called night vailes round their shoulders. The writer of the verses asked if women wanted to go on wearing top knots now that they were being worn by animals like these. At the time cat was slang for a prostitute, owls were considered foolish, and apes vain and undiscriminating."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106453","uid":"adlib-term-106453","uuid":"60056370-7375-3dac-996c-6cc9d5db35a9"},"summary_title":"17th Century, Late"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-113534","uid":"adlib-term-113534","uuid":"cadd0cd3-aded-384c-a37e-c3d7338b00e9"},"summary_title":"James II"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-113529","uid":"adlib-term-113529","uuid":"5898861a-6410-3868-bc4e-ca25f0921043"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"England"}],"summary_title":"England","type":"country"}]],"note":[{"value":"probably Brislington"}],"summary_title":"Brislington"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106216","uid":"adlib-term-106216","uuid":"825b8379-ec94-388e-9a59-624e40c090d0"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"England"}],"summary_title":"England","type":"country"}]],"note":[{"value":"possibly"}],"summary_title":"London"}]}]},"materials":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","units":"cm","value":"39"},{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"8.3"}]},"multimedia":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-186954","uid":"adlib-media-186954","uuid":"cb850350-919f-3189-b4cd-eae8660f3c09"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/c_1443_1928_1_201011_mfj22_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":1024},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":973}]},"modified":1742596728382,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/mid_c_1443_1928_1_201011_mfj22_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":526},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1742596728382,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/c_1443_1928_1_201011_mfj22_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":1024},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":973}]},"modified":1742596728382,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/preview_c_1443_1928_1_201011_mfj22_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":263},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1742596728382,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"0","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-186955","uid":"adlib-media-186955","uuid":"f7387843-df97-3f19-805a-3a1d45a14cc0"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/c_1443_1928_2_201011_mfj22_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":1024},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":1022}]},"modified":1742596688500,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/mid_c_1443_1928_2_201011_mfj22_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":501},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1742596688500,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/c_1443_1928_2_201011_mfj22_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":1024},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":1022}]},"modified":1742596688500,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/preview_c_1443_1928_2_201011_mfj22_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":250},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1742596688500,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"1","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}}],"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-90855","uid":"adlib-term-90855","uuid":"b48207ec-774d-3e3e-8ab3-536996bc5dac"},"summary_title":"dish"}},{"value":"charger"}],"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"Sir Ashton Lever's Museum Leverianum, Leicester House, London, probably 1774-88; James Parkinson, exhibited at the Rotunda, south end of Blackfriars Bridge, London, until 1806; sold by King and Lochee, Catalogue of the Leverian Museum, May 5 1806 and following 65 days, on the eleventh day of the sale, Friday, 15 May, lot 1204 for 18s.0d.; sold to Dent.
