After the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Dutch influence on the arts in England was very strong, and for about thirty years floral decoration including cut tulips and other flowers in vases was very popular. Delftware potters in London responded to this fashion by producing large dishes, known to collectors as 'chargers', decorated either with tulips growing from a small mound and spreading over the whole surface of the dish, or arranged in a vase, and usually having round the edge a continues series of blue, or sometimes yellow dashes. This is the earliest dated example decorated with tulips. Most of these chargers are of a deep bowl-like form standing on a footring, but this exceptionally large example has a wide flat centre with shallow sides and a broad rim. The arrangement of the pomegranates and parti-coloured leaves in panels separated by blue trellis pattern suggests that the design was influenced by Chinese blue and white dishes of the Wanli period (1573-1619), but the fruit and leaves were probably derived from dishes imported from Italy or the Netherlands. Pomegranates was auspicious because they were symbols of fertility, and in Christian art, of the immortality of the soul. \n\nThe initials WS on the front may be those of the pot-painter, because they also appear on the back. Two possible candidates were William Saddes (recorded in 1663) and William Shelton (recorded in 1665) both working in Southwark."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-118768","uid":"adlib-term-118768","uuid":"29189213-4535-3c4d-91a9-481c59775014"},"summary_title":"17th Century, third The design was copied from a French lead-glazed earthenware dish, traditionally attributed to Bernard Palissy (c\/ 1510- 1590), but probably made by one of his followers in Paris, Fontainebleau, or Rouen A French merchant, Claude Beaulat, living in London, seems to have specialized in importing ceramics from France, could have been the channel through which dishes of this design reached London. (See Documentation, Britton, and Denis-Dupuis)\n\nThe Pickleherring, Montague Close, and Rotherhithe potteries in Southwark were operating in 1651 when this dish was made, but it seems likely that it was made at Pickleherring. The sailing ship in the circular depressions, links the dish to seven others with ship motifs in their borders. One of these, at Colonial Williamsburg (inv. 19698-123) is decorated with the arms of the Broderers' Company and the initials N\/RE and date 1661, probably for Richard and Elizabeth Newnham. Richard was the proprietor of the Pickleherring pottery, Southwark from 1647 until his death in 1684, and there is therefore a strong likelihood that this group of Fecundity dishes was made there. The first London tin-glazed earthenware pottery at Aldgate operated from about 1570 until about 1615. It seems more likely that this bowl could have been made at Montague Close in Southwark which was founded by two merchants, Edmund Bradshawe and Nicholas Mawley, who obtained a lease on a property there in 1612. Bradshawe in partnership with another merchant, Hugh Cressey, applied for and obtained a monopoly of the manufacture of 'earthenware as used in Fiansa and ... beyond the seas' on 24 July 1613. The products were to include 'paving tiles of all sises, dishes of all sises, pott of all sizes' for twenty-one years. Another pot house was founded at Pickleherring in Southwark by Christian Wilhelm, who had come from the Netherlands in 1604., and at first manufactured smalt, a cobalt-blue colouring. He was probably running a pottery by c. 1612-13 as in 1628, when he was granted a 21 year monopoly to make 'Galliware' (a term for imported tin-glazed wares) of all kinds', he stated that he had been doing do so for sixteen years. \n\nThis bowl resembles, but not exactly, the deep fluted and lobed white maiolica basins and shallower deep dishes which were made in Faenza in Italy in the late sixteenth century. 'Bianchi da Faenza' - Faena white wares - were famed for the high quality and whiteness of their glaze from the mid 16th century and were later imitated in the Low Countries and elsewhere. They were decorated mainly in blue, yellow, and orange, with borders and central motifs such as medallions enclosing figures, painted in a summary or sketchy style, known as 'a compendiario'. Many of the large basins and shallower dishes had radiating or crossing ribbon patterns with blue designs akin to embroidery, described as 'a ricamo'. The design on this English dish was probably based on a Faenza bowl of that type (see C. ). The popularity of white wares with blue decoration was ultimately derived from imported Chinese blue and white porcelain, which had been collected by wealthy Italians such as the Medici family, since the 15th century, and entered western Europe in increasing quantities after the founding of the English and Dutch East India Companies in 1600 and 1602."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-128237","uid":"adlib-term-128237","uuid":"51b637f9-993d-3061-a3d8-a539dbd02235"},"summary_title":"17th Century, Early"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-126651","uid":"adlib-term-126651","uuid":"2666efca-6d16-3ce2-994f-3d409f58edd5"},"summary_title":"James I"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106216","uid":"adlib-term-106216","uuid":"825b8379-ec94-388e-9a59-624e40c090d0"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"England"}],"summary_title":"England","type":"country"}]],"summary_title":"London"}]}]},"materials":[{"note":[{"value":"pale buff"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","units":"cm","value":"38"}]},"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-89303","uid":"adlib-term-89303","uuid":"7012fd66-769f-33c8-bb38-d805db27c8c9"},"summary_title":"basin"}}],"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"Sold by Simon Westman and Jonathan Horne, date unknown (label affixed to the underside of the dish); private UK collector; from whom purchased by the vendor, Kevin Morris."}],"owners":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"publications":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"publication-1621","uid":"adlib-publication-1621","uuid":"8563c349-37ce-37e5-9b1c-4788233297ff"},"summary_title":"Early English Delftware from London and Virginia"},{"@link":{"notes":"Cf. p. 37, no. 80, the earliest English fluted dish of Faenza or Montelupo crespina type painted in blue is dated 1629.p. 39, three lobed or fluted and lobed dishes with good white glaze, and different types of decoration are no. 95, decorated with polychrome grotesques imitating Urbino (or some other town's) maiolica, dated 1649; no. 97, white with blue coat of arms of the Company of Parish Clerks, dated 1649; white, painted in blue with coat of arms of the Grocers' Company, dated 1651. This bottle decorated with a late Ming design known to collectors as 'birds on rocks' is one of the earliest examples of the influence of Cjhnese blue and white porcelain on English ceramics. Numerous fragments decorated with this pattern have been found on the south bank of the Thames in the area of the Montague Close, Pickleherriing and Rotherhithe potteries. However, the date, 1628. on this bottle is significant, because in that year a royal patent for the manufacture of galliware, the contemporary term for tin-glazed earthenware, was granted to Christian Wilhelm, the proprietor of a pottery at Pickleherring in Southwark. It therefore seems likely that the bottle was made at his pottery, which was probably in Vine Yard, a short distance south of Pickleherring Street. It was operating by 1618 and continued until 1723. The 'birds on rocks' pattern can be associated with Wilhelm because it occurs on kiln wasters found nearby at Potter's Fields, Southwark. After Wilhelm's death in 1630, his son-in-law Thomas Townsend inherited the pottery and appears to have continued making wares decorated with this pattern until the early 1640s. Six more bottles similar to this are known bearing he same date."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-121013","uid":"adlib-term-121013","uuid":"299c1732-ddc2-3547-a136-ebe34ac3f158"},"summary_title":"17th Century, second
