The author discusses the mark W(***) and B & W for Birch & Whitehead which was found separately on pieces of a service decorated with Angoul\u00e8me sprig pattern, and is further support for associating the W(***) mark with Whitehead. Birch and Christopher Whitehead were in partnership c. 1796-8. Birch continued, and Whitehead inherited the factory run successively by his father Christopher Charles Whitehead, and his mother Dorothy which he ran till 1804. The author also discusses another possible explanation of the mark - briefly -the Whiteheads inherited the business from their Chatterley uncles. whose business was dissolved in 1793. At the time there were three Whiteheads, James, John, and Charles, so could the three asterisks originally have stood for the three partners? But he points out that this does not explain its use later.","page":"55-7","type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"publication-200002918","uid":"adlib-publication-200002918","uuid":"7a3de9dc-7a42-30ad-b4d7-09dc161c5942"},"summary_title":"W(***) - Another Pointer to the Whitehead Connection"}],"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-34935","uid":"adlib-term-34935","uuid":"b6750733-fe79-33fc-b39a-c296fcd223b4"},"summary_title":"plate"}},"summary_title":"plate","techniques":[{"note":[{"value":"green"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120062","uid":"adlib-term-120062","uuid":"d05176fb-17b8-3888-bba1-6c5e6c77d206"},"summary_title":"lead-glazing"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120085","uid":"adlib-term-120085","uuid":"68c62b7c-aaf4-38a5-a1be-4d6c615c0714"},"summary_title":"press-moulding"}}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}},{"_index":"ciim","_type":"data","_id":"adlib-object-74791","_score":20.072926,"_source":{"admin":{"added":1592984312000,"created":1312637261000,"flag":"Standard Record","id":"object-74791","indexed":1747246353399,"modified":1714467786000,"processed":1747245848890,"source":"adlib","stream":"fitz-online","uid":"adlib-object-74791","uri":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/74791","uuid":"a2594308-fc63-3a83-82b8-977b7414065a","version":12},"categories":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42868","uid":"adlib-term-42868","uuid":"12e3067e-2626-36c9-9d36-870f776c981f"},"summary_title":"creamware"}],"component":[{"materials":[{"note":[{"value":"yellow and brown"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-32638","uid":"adlib-term-32638","uuid":"97b8d1a5-7b8f-3a2a-a275-7d001aeaae2b"},"summary_title":"enamel"}}],"name":"Decoration","techniques":[{"note":[{"value":"in yellow and brown enamels"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106226","uid":"adlib-term-106226","uuid":"194567f2-2bcd-3446-ae31-652386611815"},"summary_title":"painting"}}]},{"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","units":"cm","value":"21.2"}]},"name":"Bowl","techniques":[{"description":[{"value":"cream-coloured earthenware, thrown, turned, pierced, and painted in yellow and brown enamels"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120082","uid":"adlib-term-120082","uuid":"ea83ed85-6b07-3e7e-83fc-440cfda22f7e"},"summary_title":"throwing"}}]},{"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","units":"cm","value":"22.3"}]},"name":"Cover","techniques":[{"note":[{"value":"groups of petal-shaped, circular and diamond-shaped holes"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-26483","uid":"adlib-term-26483","uuid":"c5756b64-2720-3558-9d90-98bd4a27592f"},"summary_title":"piercing"}}]}],"department":{"value":"Applied Arts"},"description":[{"value":"Creamware bowl and cover. The author discusses the presence of the W(***) mark and B & W on different pieces in part of a service decorated with Angoul\u00e8me sprig pattern, which lends further support to the association of the W(***) with Whitehead. Birch and Christopher Whitehead were in partnership between c. 1796-98. Birch continued and Whitehead inherited the factory run successively by his father and mother, where he continued until 1804. He also discusses another possible interpretation of the mark - briefly - the Whitehead's inherited the business from their Chatterley uncles in 1793. At that time there were three Whiteheads, James, John, and Charles. He suggests that the three asterisks after a W could have stood for these three Whiteheads. But this does not explain its use later.","page":"55-57","type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"publication-200002918","uid":"adlib-publication-200002918","uuid":"7a3de9dc-7a42-30ad-b4d7-09dc161c5942"},"summary_title":"W(***) - Another Pointer to the Whitehead Connection"}],"school_or_style":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-9044","uid":"adlib-term-9044","uuid":"99dcb503-1a64-3792-8a40-48eda95dd763"},"summary_title":"Neoclassical"}],"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107560","uid":"adlib-term-107560","uuid":"a2140f65-c302-3998-badc-65657edee0a6"},"summary_title":"cream bowl"}},"summary_title":"cream bowl","techniques":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120062","uid":"adlib-term-120062","uuid":"d05176fb-17b8-3888-bba1-6c5e6c77d206"},"summary_title":"lead-glazing"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120075","uid":"adlib-term-120075","uuid":"52ab8602-9259-3aac-b4df-b2392a4d206c"},"summary_title":"turning"}}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"SET"}}}],"first_page_url":"?page=1","from":1,"last_page":1,"last_page_url":"?page=1","links":[{"url":null,"label":"« Previous","active":false},{"url":"?page=1","label":"1","active":true},{"url":null,"label":"Next »","active":false}],"next_page_url":null,"path":"","per_page":24,"prev_page_url":null,"to":2,"total":2}]
