The musician stands on his right leg with his left extended in front. In his left hand he holds a large brown pipe to his lips. In his right hand he holds a brown drum-stick with which he plays on a monstrous white drum decorated with pale brown rope trimmings. The base of the drum rests on the tree-stump, and it is supported by a beige strap which hangs over his left arm. The drummer has thick curly grey hair hanging down to his shoulders. It was modelled about 1747 after 'Le Proven\u00e7al', plate 9 of the fourth set of \u00c9tudes prises dans le bas Peuple ou les Cris de Paris, engraved by the comte de Caylus (1692-1765) after drawings by Edme Bouchardon (1689-1762), published in 1742. The posture of the figure differs from the drawing because it was necessary for it to be supported by the tree stump behind it. The musician's weight is therefore on his right leg with his left extended in front of him, whereas in the drawing the man stands with his weight on both The Hurdy-gurdy player, Meissen model no. 960, was probably modelled by Peter Reinicke after Le Vieilleux, the 8th print in \u00c9tudes prises dans le bas Peuple ou les Cris de Paris, Quatri\u00e8me Suitte, 1742, engraved by the comte de Caylus (1692-1765), after drawings by Edme Bouchardon (1689-1762). The prints were issued in sets of twelve, two in 1737, and one in 1738, 1742 and 1746. The complete series, accompanied by the drawings, was bound and given by Bouchardon to his friend, Jean-Piere Mariette, the celebrated Parisian printseller and connoisseur, and is now in the British Museum (Print Room, Imp. 197.8c). The figure of the Hurdy-gurdy player is transposed from the figure in the print, and corresponds with the original drawing, but has a more exaggerated pose. The low rectangular base has an asymetrical point at the front, and rises up at the back into a heap of rocks which supports the figure. The top of the base is decorated with applied leaves, two mauve flowers with yellow centres, and a yellow flower with a mauve centre. The youth steps forward on his right leg and has his left behind him. He stoops under the weight of a huge cream wicker basket filled with buff-coloured oval loaves, which he supports with his right hand. His left is by his side holding three brown wooden tallies on a string.
