An example is in the Schreiber Collection in the Victoria & Albert Museum, (inv. 414:204-1885). The model was based on a mezzotint by James McArdell (1729-65) after a portrait by Francis Hayman of the actor James Quin (1693-1766) in the role of Sir John Falstaff, a character who appears in Shakespeare's plays, Henry IV Parts I and II, and the Merry Wives of Windsor. Quin performed the role several times on the London stage between 1742 and 1757, when he retired. The porcelain figure was gilded, but on the earthenware version yellow has been used instead of gold. \nEnoch Wood entered into a formal partnership with James Caldwell in 1793 when his newly-built factory at Fountain Place, Burslem was completed, and they continued in partnership until 1820. The bold colouring of this figure, indicates that it was made c. 1800-15 rather than in the 1790s."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106498","uid":"adlib-term-106498","uuid":"272179a1-524b-3f36-aab7-bf342ce484d6"},"summary_title":"19th Century, Early"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107437","uid":"adlib-term-107437","uuid":"96f4b0d1-fc11-39ff-ae91-1b23d888d479"},"summary_title":"George III"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120913","uid":"adlib-term-120913","uuid":"e4970c5f-8e8f-3ab2-81aa-e534c6c301d4"},"summary_title":"George III (Regency)"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-108171","uid":"adlib-term-108171","uuid":"c943fe08-bd72-32ab-823c-e1eeb56717b3"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"England"}],"summary_title":"England","type":"country"},{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"Staffordshire"}],"summary_title":"Staffordshire","type":"region"}]],"summary_title":"Burslem"}]}]},"materials":[{"note":[{"value":"white"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"22.2"},{"dimension":"Width","units":"cm","value":"12.8"}]},"multimedia":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-47475","uid":"adlib-media-47475","uuid":"cdef3805-9bd1-3dae-b055-9621314b9557"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/C_906_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583605632,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/mid_C_906_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":649},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1742583605632,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/C_906_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583605632,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/preview_C_906_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":325},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1742583605632,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"0","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-47476","uid":"adlib-media-47476","uuid":"a26c2ce4-ec49-3e5c-ba8a-e75f1345f694"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/C_906_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583587879,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/mid_C_906_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":649},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1742583587879,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/C_906_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583587879,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/preview_C_906_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":325},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1742583587879,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"1","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}}],"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107454","uid":"adlib-term-107454","uuid":"6ca0f2ab-c1f8-329d-8a45-8f1322f53a20"},"summary_title":"figure"}}],"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"Dr Griffin, Banbury from whom bought for \u00a32.5.0s. by Mr Roe of Cambridge; sold by him in January 1903 to Dr J.W.L. The theme, however, may have been inspired by a more recent work, Otto van Veen's Amorum Emblemata (1608), which included the verse:\n\t'Loues harrte is euer young\n\tT'is onlie tyme that can the winges of Cupid clip,\n\tAnd make him fly more low than he was wont to doo,\n\tBut Tyme clips not away his good will thereunto,\n\tThe aged carter loves to heare the lashing whip.'"}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120880","uid":"adlib-term-120880","uuid":"91c8f217-47bf-321d-93f9-504a4a1305f0"},"summary_title":"18th Century, second half"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107437","uid":"adlib-term-107437","uuid":"96f4b0d1-fc11-39ff-ae91-1b23d888d479"},"summary_title":"George III"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-110521","uid":"adlib-term-110521","uuid":"b57fb046-bca3-3371-a721-2093adc3a282"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"England"}],"summary_title":"England","type":"country"}]],"summary_title":"Derby"}]}]},"materials":[{"note":[{"value":"presumed lead"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107733","uid":"adlib-term-107733","uuid":"00160189-e3ce-3796-a88b-5aa8d6c808c4"},"summary_title":"lead-glaze"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-37637","uid":"adlib-term-37637","uuid":"89b09133-dc0a-3a88-bd40-5aef1ad30ecb"},"summary_title":"soft-paste porcelain"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"33"}]},"multimedia":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-17393","uid":"adlib-media-17393","uuid":"51b4348b-8e0b-3f77-af13-f6799110b1a3"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa19\/C_38_1932.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":760},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":532}]},"modified":1702926508083,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa19\/mid_C_38_1932.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":714},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1702926508083,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa19\/C_38_1932.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":760},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":532}]},"modified":1702926508083,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa19\/preview_C_38_1932.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":357},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1702926508083,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"0","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}}],"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-110220","uid":"adlib-term-110220","uuid":"e22d3544-a393-3f19-9be4-dc2632ca9942"},"summary_title":"figure group"}}],"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"unknown before donor, Mrs W.D.
