The low, rounded, rocky mound base rises up at the back into a low pile of rocks which support the figure. The top is scattered with applied leaves and two flowers: purple and white, and yellow with a purple centre. She stands on her right leg with her left relaxed beside it. She leans back from the waist, looking down towards her right, holding her right hand up to toy with a tress of her greyish-brown hair which hangs over her shoulders. Her left hand rests on her hip. Her head is covered by a white bonnet, fastened under her chin with purple bow, and a quatrefoil 'garnet' pendant on her brow. There are brown rocks round the edge, and in the middle of the back, a heap of rocks forming a seat. The top is painted with bluish-green grass. The shepherdess sits on the rock seat  holding her handkerchief to her eyes with her left hand and resting hr right on the shoulders of a youth who kneels beside her. He has his left hand round her waist and holds his right to his chest. His bag and hulot lie on the grass in front of him. The dead sheep lies across the right end of the base . The bare-footed girl has pale brown hair, dressed in a double chignon at the back of her head. She wears a full-sleeved chemise, a white bodice with a red edge, gold seams, and two blue double bows on the shoulders, neckline and  waist.  The boy has a white shirt and neckcloth, a pink jacket with gold edging, pale yellow breeches and black shoes. His bag is brown with two red bows and there is another at the top of his houlot. A blue and yellow drape is wrapped around her waist and right arm, and hangs down at the back. A brown-haired and nude putto, lies on the ground in front of her with his right arm raised under the drape. The rounded square low mound base has a tree stump at the back, and is decorated on top with applied leaves, and a red, a yellow and a mauve flower. The hurdy-gurdy player stands on his left foot with right leg forward. He carries a large white hurdy-gurdy outlined in black, and with his right hand turns the handle of the wheel which sounds the strings, while with his left hand he plays upon the keys which stop the strings and thus obtain the notes. The Hurdy-gurdy player, Meissen model no. 960, was probably modelled by Peter Reinicke after Le Vieilleux, the 8th print in \u00c9tudes prises dans le bas Peuple ou les Cris de Paris, Quatri\u00e8me Suitte, 1742, engraved by the comte de Caylus (1692-1765), after drawings by Edme Bouchardon (1689-1762). The prints were issued in sets of twelve, two in 1737, and one in 1738, 1742 and 1746. The complete series, accompanied by the drawings, was bound and given by Bouchardon to his friend, Jean-Piere Mariette, the celebrated Parisian printseller and connoisseur, and is now in the British Museum (Print Room, Imp. 197.8c). The figure of the Hurdy-gurdy player is transposed from the figure in the print, and corresponds with the original drawing, but has a more exaggerated pose.
