Initially it was used for the borders of istoriato scenes, and by the last decade of the century often occupied much of the surfaces of dishes and other vessels. This dish belonged to an armorial service of which at least nine other pieces are extant. Four circular dishes have a Saint in the middle and the arms on the rim above: St Paul, in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (48.1516); St Thomas, formerly in the Bak collection; St Mark formerly in the Pringsheim and Hannaford collections; and St John, formerly in the Ridout collection. A fifth with the arms in the well was sold anonymously by Sotheby's in 1980 and is now in the Gardiner Museum, Toronto (G83.1.405). Four oval dishes decorated respectively with a figure representing Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winters, are in the Museo d'Arti Applicate, Milan (inv. nos. 234, 240, 239 and 236). The service was probably made around 1600 because the style of its grotesque decoration is close to a dish in the Louvre, Paris, bearing the arms of Cardinal Paolo Emilio Zacchia (Cardinal 1598-1605), and attributed to the Patanazzi workshop in Urbino. The best-known family who bore the arms on this dish - bendy or and azure - was the Contarini of Venice. Possible members of the family who were either an archbishop or a bishop, indicated by the green hat and cross above the arms, were Tommaso Contarini who was Archbishop of Crete (1597-1605), or a less notable cleric, Gerolamo Contarini who was Bishop of Capo d'Istria (1600-20).
The dish is historically interesting because its ownership can be traced back to 1712 when it was sold with the dishes mentioned above by Girolamo Talpa (1654-1739) of San Severino (Marche) to Cardinal Filippo Antonio Gualtieri (1660-1728). Five, including the Fitzwilliam's were later in the collection of Sir Andrew Fountaine of Narford Hall, Norfolk, and were sold by Christie, Manson & Woods in 1884.
@link":
{"@link":
{"@link":
[{"@link":
[[{"@link":
{"@link":
{"@link":
[{"@link":
{"@link":
{"@link":
Probably Girolamo Talpa (1654-1739),San Severino (Marche); sold by him to Cardinal Filippo Antonio Gualtieri (1660-1728), Orvieto and Rome. Xanto frequently constructed the scenes on his dishes with figures taken from several different engraved sources. The scene from the story of Ulysses and Circe was constructed from four. Ulysses was derived from 'Jupiter', dated 1528, by the Monogrammist IB. The figure also resembles Perseus in the woodcut illustration of Perseus and Andromeda in 'Ouidio methamorphoseos vulgare', Venice (Lucantonio Giunta), 1497. Circe was taken from the Muse Euterpe in the engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi of Raphael's 'Parnassus'. The two servants were adapted and transposed from the servants at the banquet given in Aeneas' honour by Dido, in the lowest right panel of the 'Quos Ego' engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi. The plate is decorated with the story of Ulysses and Circe which is told in Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book XIV, 248-307, the incident portrayed on the dish in lines 293-8. Circe had transformed Ulysses' companions into swine after giving them poisoned wine at a feast in her palace. Only one, Eurylochus, refrained from drinking and escaped to tell Ulysses. When the latter arrived at the palace he refused the poisoned cup offered by Circe and threatened her with his sword. Then, having made a marriage pact with her, he demanded as a wedding gift that she return his companions to their rightful forms. On arriving at Jerusalem before the Passover, Jesus entered the temple and found it full of money changers and vendors of sacrificial animals. Incensed, he made a scourge and drove them out, upsetting their tables and money, and saying to the dove sellers “Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house a house of merchandise.”

The enameller, Martial Ydeux (active from the late 1540s to about 1570) was one of the finest exponents of the grisaille technique, who seems to have worked mainly on plaques. His best work is extraordinarily refined and expressive, with soft gradations of grey to white on a manganese-black ground producing painterly sfumato effects. Other plaques, also signed, have more obvious hatching and cross-hatching in the manner of an engraving, executed by enlevage through the pale upper layer to reveal the darker toned enamel below, as on the Fitzwilliam's M.3-1954, where it is particularly pronounced.

This scene was enamelled after one of the thirty-seven woodcuts in the series known as the 'Small Passion' by Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), executed between 1509 and publication in book form in 1511, or a copy after it. The subject is not one which would stand alone well, and the plaque is therefore likely to have been part of a Passion group, which, depending on its numbers, could have been framed as an altarpiece, as polychrome Passion plaques were, or as a smaller triptych or panel for devotional use. However, no large groups of grisaille Passion plaques have survived from this period in their original frame. The most extensive group attributed to Martial Ydeux comprises ten larger plaques in the Louvre, three of which are signed in the same way as the Fitzwilliam's plaque, M.3-1954: ‘M·D·’ with I inside the D. There are several Passion plaques by Ydeux of about the same size as the Fitzwilliam's, including 'Christ washing St Peter’s Feet' (Louvre OA 4004), and 'Christ before Pilate' in the British Museum (Inv. 1913,1220.75), which could be from the same set, and can be seen on these museums' The Last Supper, Christ’s final Passover meal with his disciples at which he instituted the Eucharist or Holy Communion, is described in three of the Gospels - Matthew 26, 20-30; Mark 14, 17-26, and Luke 22,14-38 - and is briefly mentioned in St John 13, 1-3.

The source of the design was 'The Last Supper' in Albrecht Dürer’s thirty-seven woodcuts known as the Small Passion, executed in 1509¬-10, and published in book form with a Latin text in Nuremberg in1511. The enameller followed the print closely, including the prominent hatching, but exchanged a sturdy flagon in the right foreground for an elegant pseudo-classical ewer, and omitted a small covered pot on the table. The plaque was probably part of series of Passion plaques, which, depending on its numbers, could have been framed as an altarpiece, as some polychrome Passion plaques were, or as a smaller triptych or panel for devotional use. However, no large groups of grisaille Passion plaques have survived from this period in their original frame.The most extensive group attributed to Martial Ydeux comprises ten larger plaques in the Louvre, three of which are signed in the same way as this one.

Other signed plaques, including this one, have more obvious hatching and cross-hatching in the manner of an engraving, executed by enlevage with a needle through the pale upper layer to reveal the darker toned enamel below. Similar differences in execution are present between the Louvre’s plaques of 'Christ washing St Peter’s Feet' and the' Nailing of Christ to the Cross' both initialled MD enclosing I.(Inv. OA 4004 and OA 970).
@link":
16th Century,
