It was made in the workshop of Maestro Giorgio Andreoli, the leading potter in Gubbio, who was famed for his lustred maiolica. Most maiolica had two firings, but lustre ware required a third, was therefore a highly-prized luxury product. Many examples have their owner's arms in the well, or elsewhere on differently-shaped dishes. The grotesque decoration on the rim was derived from Roman architectural ornament, probably through the medium of prints. At least ten other examples of broad-rimmed bowls (often described as tondini) are recorded, all but one decorated with grotesques on the rim: one dated 1521 in the Lehman Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; another in that museum, formerly in the Blumenthal Collection, inv. 41.100.227; one in the Dutuit Collection at the Petit Palais, Paris; one in the Louvre; two in the Museo Civico, Bologna; one decorated with trophies instead of grotesques, in the Musée des Antiquités, Rouen, one sold at Sotheby's, London, on 21 November 1978, lot 43; and two sold by Christie's, New York, on 12 October 2023, lots 189 and 200. See the Documentation for bibliography. Inscribed `FAVSTINA', it differs from the rest of the group in having a border of bound leaves and fruits. The others are `DEIDAMIA' in the Kunstgewerbe¬museum, Berlin.`BRADAMANTE BEL' at the Ceramic Museum at Sèvres, and later, and painted in a different style, `MARFISA' in the Museo Internationale delle Ceramiche at Faenza.
Closely related to Deidamia is a small group of dishes with girls wearing visor-like headdresses and a cloth snood enclosing their hair at the back of their head: `CARENDINA' in the Lehman collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, `TARSIA B [Bella]' in the Gambier¬-Parry collec¬tion at the Courtauld Institute Galleries, London, and `PHILOMENA' in the Metropolitan Museum. The Fitzwilliam Museum's MARTA B' differs from all these in having an extremely long and slender neck, a zoomorphic helmet as opposed to one decorated with grotesque masks, wings or shell-like coils, and an arched name scroll instead of a coiling ribbon passing behind her shoulders. In this respect it resembles two dishes decorated with heads of men wearing Saracen-style helmets and having an arched scroll over their head bearing their name, 'CATELINA' and 'SANSONE'. Xanto's reference on the back of this dish to canto 37 (stanzas 25-9) of Orlando Furioso, shows that he used the first edition, published in 1516 and reprinted in 1521, 1524, and each year until 1531. In the second edition of 1532 and subsequent editions, the action takes place in canto 41 (stanzas 25-9). These editions had no illustrations to serve as a basis for the illustration on the dish. So Xanto followed his usual practice of constructing a scene with figures taken from prints, in this case just one, the Abduction of Helen, engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi after Raphael. The first illustrated Orlando Furioso with a simple woodcut to each canto had been published in 1530, but it was not until 1542 that really lively illustrations appeared in the edition by Gabrielli Giolito de' Ferrari of Venice.
This is one of thirty-six dishes surviving from a service bearing the arms of a member of the Pucci family of Florence. Thirty-four are dated 1532 and two, 1533. The identity of the owner of the service is uncertain. Piero Maria Pucci of Florence (b. 1467) is one member of the family who has been suggested. Another was Roberto Pucci, whose wife having died in 1526, entered the Church, becoming Bishop of Pistoia in 1541, and a Cardinal in 1542, after which he impaled the Farnese arms with Pucci. He died aged eighty-three in 1547. Most of the dishes are decorated with scenes from classical mythology or history, but this dish and another in the British Museum differ in having scenes from one of the greatest romantic epic poems, Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533). The action shown on the Fitzwilliam's dish takes place after the hero, Ruggiero, had abandoned his ship in a storm off the coast of Egypt, leaving on board his horse, Frontino, his armour and his magic sword, Belisarda.
