The corners are filled with a carved pattern which mimics the oval trellis.\tThere are incised outlines to the main edges, and traces of tool markings and brown, blue and green colours on the sides. The top is flat and undecorated, except for the maker\u2019s name incised in script; it has a waisted and chamfered edge, 4cm deep. The bottom is roughly made with a large circular hole in the middle. They  designed, made and decorated their own ornamental salt-glazed stoneware, originally using facilities at C.J.C.Bailey\u2019s Fulham Pottery and, briefly, at Shepherd\u2019s Bush. In 1877, they opened their own pottery at  Southall, Middlesex, and by 1882 were producing  some 5,000 pieces a year. Wallace had originally trained as a sculptor, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy and elsewhere from c.1863. His younger brothers had learned their skills at Doulton\u2019s, Walter as a thrower and chemist, Edwin as a decorator. Modelled work is generally attributed to Wallace, but otherwise it is thought that the three learned from each other, exchanging skills and sharing roles. A fourth brother, Charles (1846-1910), sold the products \u2013 known as \u2018Martin-ware\u2019 \u2013 from a shop at Brownlow Street, London."},{"value":"The owl, 103 cm high, is also in the Fitzwilliam collection."},{"value":"The plinth was made to support a punch bowl, made to resemble an owl, which modelled by (Robert) Wallace Martin at the Martin Brothers' pottery in Southall. It remained there until  it was sold to Dr Glaisher at the 1924 sale which followed Wallace\u2019s death the previous year. They designed, made and decorated their own ornamental salt-glazed stoneware, originally using facilities at C.J.C.Bailey\u2019s Fulham Pottery and, briefly, at Shepherd\u2019s Bush. In 1877, they opened their own pottery at Southall, Middlesex, and by 1882 were producing  some 5,000 pieces a year. Wallace had originally trained as a sculptor, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy and elsewhere from c.1863. His younger brothers had learned their skills at Doulton\u2019s, Walter as a thrower and chemist, Edwin as a decorator. Modelled work is generally attributed to Wallace, but otherwise it is thought that the three learned from each other, exchanging skills and sharing roles. The decoration follows principles of geometric design set out by Owen Jones in his Grammar of Ornament, 1856, and developed by Christopher Dresser in The Principles of Decorative Design, 1873. Dresser encouraged designs where \u2018power, energy, force or vigour  [form] the dominant idea [\u2026as] in the bursting buds of Spring\u2019. They designed, made and decorated their own ornamental salt-glazed stoneware, originally using facilities at C.J.C.Bailey\u2019s Fulham Pottery and, briefly, at Shepherd\u2019s Bush. In 1877, they opened their own pottery at  Southall, Middlesex, and by 1882 were producing  some 5,000 pieces a year. Wallace had originally trained as a sculptor, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy and elsewhere from c.1863. His younger brothers had learned their skills at Doulton\u2019s, Walter as a thrower and chemist, Edwin as a decorator. Modelled work is generally attributed to Wallace, but otherwise it is thought that the three learned from each other, exchanging skills and sharing roles. A fourth brother, Charles (1846-1910), sold the products \u2013 known as \u2018Martin-ware\u2019 \u2013 from a shop at Brownlow Street, London."},{"value":"This is one of a number of examples of Martin Brothers\u2019 vases and jugs decorated with an all-over pattern of marine life, which were inspired by Japanese work.  The decoration is generally thought to be by Edwin Martin, though Malcom Haslam suggests that Walter E Willy, who worked for the Martins until 1899, may have originally drawn the fish with comical They designed, made and decorated their own ornamental salt-glazed stoneware, originally using facilities at C.J.C.Bailey\u2019s Fulham Pottery and, briefly, at Shepherd\u2019s Bush. In 1877, they opened their own pottery at  Southall, Middlesex, and by 1882 were producing  some 5,000 pieces a year. Wallace had originally trained as a sculptor, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy and elsewhere from c.1863. His younger brothers had learned their skills at Doulton\u2019s, Walter as a thrower and chemist, Edwin as a decorator. Modelled work is generally attributed to Wallace, but otherwise it is thought that the three learned from each other, exchanging skills and sharing roles. A fourth brother, Charles (1846-1910), sold the products \u2013 known as \u2018Martin-ware\u2019 \u2013 from a shop at Brownlow Street, London."},{"value":"This gourd-like jug is one of a number of examples of Martin Brothers\u2019 work made to suggest a natural, growing object. Rather than decorating the pot with a naturalistic design, the potter has given the pot itself a naturalistic form, and used  muted brown slip and a matt glaze to emphasise it. It has brown and blue plumage, with tufts of feathers around the eyes. Perhaps originally following in the tradition of English pottery \u2018owl\u2019 jugs and jars, the birds acquired a striking anthropomorphic quality, which in some becomes a caricature of human \u2018types\u2019 (such as \u2018The Judge\u2019) or known personalities, such as the Prime Minister, Gladstone. At the time they were made, such caricatures were popular in illustrations, an example being H Stacy Marks\u2019 painting of storks in human attitudes, published in the Magazine of Art in 1878.\nRobert Wallace Martin  (1843-24) and his brothers Walter (1857-1912) and Edwin (1860-1915) were amongst the first \u2018artist-potters\u2019 of the late nineteenth century. They  designed, made and decorated their own ornamental salt-glazed stoneware, originally using facilities at C.J.C.Bailey\u2019s Fulham Pottery and, briefly, at Shepherd\u2019s Bush. In 1877, they opened their own pottery at  Southall, Middlesex, and by 1882 were producing  some 5,000 pieces a year. Wallace had originally trained as a sculptor, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy and elsewhere from c.1863. His younger brothers had learned their skills at Doulton\u2019s, Walter as a thrower and chemist, Edwin as a decorator. Modelled work is generally attributed to Wallace, but otherwise it is thought that the three learned from each other, exchanging skills and sharing roles. A fourth brother, Charles (1846-1910), sold the products \u2013 known as \u2018Martin-ware\u2019 \u2013 from a shop at Brownlow Street, London.\nThe Wally Birds, so called because they were modelled by Robert Wallace Martin, are a particularly good example of the brothers\u2019 working together. Both Edwin and Walter Martin drew caricatures of humans as birds, both in pencil and watercolour, and Charles modified the lids so they could be turned from side to side (Haslam, 1978, p.91). The Fitzwilliam collection also contains an unusually large Martin Brothers\u2019 \u2018owl\u2019 (height 103cm),which is truer to nature, but also bears a quizzical, human-like, expression (C.41 & They  designed, made and decorated their own ornamental salt-glazed stoneware, originally using facilities at C.J.C.Bailey\u2019s Fulham Pottery and, briefly, at Shepherd\u2019s Bush. In 1877, they opened their own pottery at  Southall, Middlesex, and by 1882 were producing  some 5,000 pieces a year. Wallace had originally trained as a sculptor, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy and elsewhere from c.1863. His younger brothers had learned their skills at Doulton\u2019s, Walter as a thrower and chemist, Edwin as a decorator. Modelled work is generally attributed to Wallace, but otherwise it is thought that the three learned from each other, exchanging skills and sharing roles. A fourth brother, Charles (1846-1910), sold the products \u2013 known as \u2018Martin-ware\u2019 \u2013 from a shop at Brownlow Street, London."},{"value":"This is one of a number of examples of Martin Brothers\u2019 work decorated with slip painted over the whole surface and an incised pattern filled with clay slip. The representation is naturalistic, but the bird has quizzical, human-like expression. Both head and body are finely modelled, with particular attention to the feathers, which are painted in shades of brown slip with additional marks in brown and black. The wings are folded behind, the ears are raised and the beak is open. The eyes, made as deep hollow orbs with the pupils cut out, are encircled by cream coloured radial feathers. The glaze on the body is thinly applied, giving a matt finish; the glaze on the face and head is thicker, and shiny. They  designed, made and decorated their own ornamental salt-glazed stoneware, originally using facilities at C.J.C.Bailey\u2019s Fulham Pottery and, briefly, at Shepherd\u2019s Bush. In 1877, they opened their own pottery at  Southall, Middlesex, and by 1882 were producing  some 5,000 pieces a year. Wallace had originally trained as a sculptor, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy and elsewhere from c.1863. His younger brothers had learned their skills at Doulton\u2019s, Walter as a thrower and chemist, Edwin as a decorator. Modelled work is generally attributed to Wallace, but otherwise it is thought that the three learned from each other, exchanging skills and sharing roles. A fourth brother, Charles (1846-1910), sold the products \u2013 known as \u2018Martin-ware\u2019 \u2013 from a shop at Brownlow Street, London."},{"value":"The Fitzwilliam collection also contains an example of the Martins\u2019 more common \u2018Wally Birds\u2019, an anthropomorphic bird with large beak and comically-wise expression, 13.2 cm (C.1226 & A-1928)."},{"value":"This owl probably resembles a punch bowl said to have been made by Robert Wallace Martin for the Bohemian Club of San Francisco, a literary club founded in 1972, which has an owl as its emblem. According to the ceramic historian J F Blackler, the first model for this developed a firing crack and was not dispatched, but another arrived safely only to be destroyed by the 1906 earthquake. The Fitzwilliam\u2019s owl also has a firing crack, and probably for that reason remained at the Martin Brothers\u2019 pottery until it was sold to Dr Glaisher at the 1924 sale which followed Wallace\u2019s death the previous
