It is said that he could throw a large pot and then make a lid to fit it exactly, using only his eye and hand. Some of his pots were huge, but some were tiny: in Salford Museum there are examples of his pots which are only an inch and a half high. Towards the end of his career he gave demonstrations of throwing in the window of the local china merchants. Radford stayed at Pilkington\u2019s until he retired, in 1936, aged 76, and Pilkington\u2019s ceased pottry production soon afterwards. Numbers up to 3258 have been recorded (see Cross)."},{"value":"William Salter Mycock (b.1872), worked for Wedgwood and as a jobbing artist before joining Pilkington\u2019s from 1894 until 1938, originally as a tile decorator, and in the pottery from c.1906. His own designs favoured heraldry, flora, birds and ships and sometimes included gothic lettering; he also decorated work with designs by other artists, including Walter Crane. Mycock was also a water-colour painter, interested in music and literature, and a follower of Ruskin.
