Cylindrical cup with a single loop handle and domed cover surmounted by a finial in the shape of a multi-petalled flower on a stalk and two leaves. Circular saucer with wide, flat base and deep sloping sides. Both cup and saucer have a suspensionhole in the footring, and there is also one in the rim of the cover. The ground of all three pieces is an extremely pale yellow. The main field of the cup is decorated with alternately facing and backing foliate scrolls ending in paterae, joined by swags of 'jewels' and separated by formal arrangements of stylised flowers. Below is a band of conjoined stylised green and red buds. The borders above and below are composed of a wavy band of trailing leaves on a blue stippled ground between two wide gold bands tooled with two rows of inverted v s with cross-over bands at intervals. There are gold lines down the sides of the handle and three husks and dots down its back. The cover is decorated en suite. The flower is touched wth gold and the leaves are entirely gilt. In the centre of the saucer there is a six-petalled, stylised flower, outlined by gold leaves and conjoined green and red buds, the area within the outlines stippled with blue. The sides are decorated with a smaller version of the design on the cup, set between identical borders. No. 3) It is the earliest known design made by Boucher for the factory, and is the only one which survives in the factory\u2019s archives today. The plaster model is also preserved at the factory. In the drawing the boy is portrayed as a gardener leaning on a spade, and the figure was originally known as 'Le petit jardinier' but although he appears with a spade in painted form on tableware, the spade was omitted from the figures The Boucher drawing and the figure can be related to a series of tapestries of children, and a set of chair covers made for Madame de Pompadour by Neilson 1751-2, and listed in her inventory of 1764.This example is unusual in being glazed rather than biscuit.\n\nThe boy was one of a series of eight 'Enfants' designed by Boucher, described as \u2018Enfans de M. Boucher\u2019 or \u2018Enfans de Boucher\u2019 in the biscuit firing records and inventories after 1752, but not differentiated as to subject, although they were grouped into large, medium and small sizes. In the inventory of 1 October1752 there were 16 biscuit examples ready to be glazed at 15 livres and in the Magazin de Vente, 8 large 'Enfans' at 24 livres, 61 medium-sized at 18 livres and 10 smaller at 12 livres, which were still present in the inventory of 3 April 1753. In addition there were then 5 at 20 livres and 3 glazed examples reduced to 15 livres, and two at 20 livres in the hands of the painters. Boucher's child figures remained popular for many years. In the inventory of 1 January 1768 (work in 1767) the sculpture in biscuit included 11 of the first size at 18 livres and 445 of the 2nd size at 36 livres, and the inventory of 1 January 1770 (work in 1769) included 685 of the 2nd size at 36 livres. Today this model is usually paired with the figure of a young girl known as La petite fille au tablier.  Although the records show that the model was produced glazed and unglazed, the former are now The domed cover has a handle in the shape of a branch with leaves in relief at the junction of one end with the cover. The circular saucer has curved sides and a circular rib in the centre to enclose the foot of the cup. The white ground is painted in gold with trophies, vignettes of animals and fish, and with arrangements of rocaille scrolls, foliage and flowers. On the cup: (a) a spaniel chasing a duck and (b) a stag brought down by a hound. On the cover (a) a squirrel amid plants, (b) a stag couchant, (c) a posy of flowers and leaves. On the saucer: (a) in the centre, a large fish amid reeds, (b) on the sides, a trophy comprising a basket, a girl's hat, houlette tied with ribbon, and a bag; a trophy comprising a boy's hat, lyre, trumpet, and wind instrument; and a fanciful building, each supported by an arrangemens of scolls, floral sprays and foliage. A drawing so described  and dated 19 February 1753 is in the factory's archives (MNS, Archives de S\u00e8vres R 1, dossier 2, liasse 2, f. 1.). Two sets decorated in gold were sold for 30 livres each on 20 November 1752 (Vy1 fol. 1), another set on 24 May 1753 at the same price, and another, presumably less perfect on 5 June 1753 for 24 livres. (Vy1, fol. 3). Two sets decorated in gold with birds costing 48 livres each were delivered to Lazare Duvaux on 17 October 1752 (Vy1 fol. 5) and two more decorated in gold for 30 livres on 31 December 1753 (Vy 1, fol. 26v).\n\nThe purpose of these small covered cups is not known. As they have a cover they were perhaps used for some kind of hot potion to be consumed while
