A miniature gobelet litron with decoration very close to that on the Fitzwilliam's cup is at Haughton, Norfolk."},{"value":"Jewelled enamelling is recorded as being introduced by Philippe Parpette, a flower painter at the factory, and Joseph Cotteau, an Parisian enameller in 1778. Parpette worked mainly on this type of decoration between 1780-5. The latter left the factory in 1784, and after 1786 this type of decoration was rarely executed. The jewelled decoration was created by placing drops of translucent or opaque enamel over gold foils of different shapes formed by steel dies, and firing them so that they fused. The motif was then attached to the porcelain by an enamel and fired again at a lower temperature. This technique had been used much earlier on silver foil on early 16th century Limoges enamels on copper, and was also used, somewhat differently to create jewel effects on gold snuffboxes. The designs were usually by J.-B.-E. Genest, head of the artists\u2019 studio, and the steel dies were made by the Parisian engraver Jean-Pascal Le Guay (see Documentation, Bellaigue, 1979)"},{"value":"The gobelet litron was named after a cubic measure, the litron, which was normally made of wood, and was used for dry stuffs, such as corn and peas. Its size in Paris had been defined in 1670 as the equivalent of 9.45 cm high and 10.15 cm in diameter in pouces and lignes, which was larger than the largest of the porcelain cups. The first size of gobelet litron had been introduced at Vincennes before October 1752 when it was mentioned in an inventory of stock, but was probably being made earlier.The second and third sizes followed in 1753, and the fourth and fifth in 1757. They could be fitted with one of seven different handle forms . A drawing in the archives at S\u00e8vres is dated 19 February 1753 (MNS, R1, liasse 2, dossier 2, No. 6bis)  They were supplied singly, singly with a plateau carr\u00e9, in \u2019harlequin\u2019 sets, or as part of matching dejeuner. The jug stands on a low, circular foot. The ovoid body contracts at the neck and then rises and flares out slightly to form a wavy-edged lip at the front. The handle springs from the rim and rises up slightly before curving outwards and downwards to meet the body at a point just above its junction with the foot. There is a band of white beading at the junction of the foot and body; stiff leaves in relief forming a calyx round the lower part of the body; and two husks and a cord in relief down the back of the handle. The ground is bleu c\u00e9leste, interrupted above and below the widest point by two reserved white bands between narrow gilt lines, painted with sprays of polychrome flowers separated by two gold husks. The wide bleu c\u00e9leste zone between them is decorated with gold rinceaux between which are two small and one large oval medallions, each painted en grisaille on a reddish-brown ground to resemble brown and white sardonyx cameos. The small medallions each contain a profile head: a Roman soldier and a young woman. The larger medallion has a scene with two Roman soldiers, the one on the right seated, probably Cincinnatus, and the one on the left standing. On the underside of the spout there is a circular reserve painted in polychrome with a wreath made up of two branches of different trees (? laurel and olive) tied with a bow at the bottom. At the top the branches meet on either side of a gold Imperial crown. Within the wreath is an E made up of flowers in monogram with II in gold, for Ekaterina II. The ground on either side is decorated with gold rinceaux. There is a gold band round the foot and a dentilated band and close-set strokes of different lengths round the lip. The other part comprised the pieces for dining. The service was remarkable for its immense size, 797 pieces including the biscuit figures for table decoration, and the speed with which it was made. It was the first wholly neoclassical service to be made at S\u00e8vres, and the forms were specially designed for it, the plates for example having smooth instead of lobed rims. The use of illusionistic cameos in the decoration reflected the Empress's interest in this aspect of antique art, and innovatory techniques were used to produce them .For descriptions of the service, Circular with a wide rim, and deep well, standing on a fooring with a suspension hole.  The dish is heavy for its size. The well has a turquoise (bleu c\u00e9leste) ground with a central circular reserve framed by a chased gold band. Within it is a wreath made up of branches of laurel and myrtle,  tied with a gold bow at the bottom.  At the top the branches meet on either side of a gold Imperial crown. Within the wreath is a large script E made up of pink and blue flowers in monogram with 'II' in gold, for Ekaterina II. The rim has white inner and outer borders decorated with small floral sprays separated by husks. Beween them is a broad turquoise band decorated with finely tooled gold foliated scrolls, interupted by three small oval reserves and three larger horizontal oval reserves, each painted en grisaille on a reddish-brown ground to imitate cameos. The small reserves enclose profile heads, respectively of a young woman, a young man, and Pan. The larger reserves enclose mythological scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses: Apollo and Daphne from Book 1; The competition between Apollo and Marsyas, and the Flaying of Marsyas from Book 6. The service was remarkable for its immense size, and the speed with which it was made. It was the first wholly neoclassical service to be made at S\u00e8vres, and the forms were specially designed for it, the plates for example having smooth instead of lobed rims. The use of illusionistic cameos in the decoration reflected the Empress's interest in this aspect of antique art, and innovatory techniques were used to produce them. The outlines of those on the plates were transfer-printed before painting, a technique not normally employed on S\u00e8vres porcelain. The Fitzwilliam Museum also owns a jug from the service, Cylindrical cup with a single loop handle and domed cover surmounted by a finial in the shape of a multi-petalled flower on a stalk and two leaves. Circular saucer with wide, flat base and deep sloping sides. Both cup and saucer have a suspensionhole in the footring, and there is also one in the rim of the cover. The ground of all three pieces is an extremely pale yellow. The main field of the cup is decorated with alternately facing and backing foliate scrolls ending in paterae, joined by swags of 'jewels' and separated by formal arrangements of stylised flowers. Below is a band of conjoined stylised green and red buds. The borders above and below are composed of a wavy band of trailing leaves on a blue stippled ground between two wide gold bands tooled with two rows of inverted v s with cross-over bands at intervals. There are gold lines down the sides of the handle and three husks and dots down its back. The cover is decorated en suite. The flower is touched wth gold and the leaves are entirely gilt. In the centre of the saucer there is a six-petalled, stylised flower, outlined by gold leaves and conjoined green and red buds, the area within the outlines stippled with blue. The sides are decorated with a smaller version of the design on the cup, set between identical borders.
