On each side of the base, between the moulded leaves, there are two curving sprays of flowers and foliage, growing from the edge of the basin towards the centre, and then curving in opposite directions along the sides. There is an ant at the upper right side of the basin, and a ladybird (?) on the upper left side, covering blemishes in the glaze. The moulded foliage is outlined in gold. Between then and 1789 over 1000 were produced. Sir Geoffrey de Bellaigure (see Documentation) cited over 80 in 1784, over 400 in 1785,nearly 500 in 1786, about 160 in 1787 and fewer than 20 in 1788. He  identified this as possibly as one of three gobelet litron decorated by Tardy for which he received payment shortly after \n19 August in 1784 (MNS Vj\u20193, fo. 257). Floral initials were also painted by C.-N. Buteux."},{"value":"The gobelet litron was named after a cubic measure, the litron, which was normally made of wood, and was used for dry stuffs, such as corn and peas. Its size in Paris had been defined in 1670 as the equivalent of 9.45 cm high and 10.15 cm in diameter in pouces and lignes, which was larger than the largest of the porcelain cups. The first size of gobelet litron had been introduced at Vincennes before October 1752 when it was mentioned in an inventory of stock, but was probably being made a few years.The second and third sizes followed in 1753, and the fourth and fifth in 1757. They could be fitted with one of seven different handle forms . A drawing in the archives at S\u00e8vres is dated 19 February 1753 (MNS, R1, liasse 2, dossier 2, No. 6bis)  They were supplied singly, singly with a plateau carr\u00e9, in \u2019harlequin\u2019 sets, or as part of matching dejeuner. (See Documentation, Pr\u00e9aux 1991, Bellaigue 2009, Savill, 1988)\n\nThis is a gobelet litron of the second size with Savill's handle B. This size was usually supplied separately rather than in a tea set. Its decoration suggests that it was bought as a gift for someone with the initial There is a suspension hole in the footring.  The bleu nouveau ground is overlaid by garlands of flowers and and of leaves and berries, linked by scrolls in tooled gilding. The oval quatrefoil reserve in the centre is edged with a wide band of gilding tooled with flowerheads, and painted with a scene depicting an altar to Hymen beneath a tree. The altar is in the form of a fluted pink marble column on which stands a basket of flowers containing a flaming heart. To the right of the altar are two doves standing on an overturned urn, a two garlands of pink roses, and a bow and quiver. To the left is a torch, and a shield bearing a heart pierced by an arrow. Another bow and a quiver are suspended from the tree. In the background there is a flowering bush, and distant trees. It was made in three sizes with a plain or cinquefoil-shaped saucer. This is the second size. The form had been introduced by October 1752, when \u20187 Gobelets h\u00e9bert\u2019 and \u20184 Soucoupes Id[em]\u2019were included in a list of biscuit objects awaiting glazing at the beginning of the biscuit firing register. (Bibl. Institute de France, MS 5673 )  The third size followed in 1754. For the association of this type of cup with the name 'gobelet H\u00e9bert' see Eriksen, 1968 (see documentation).\n\nThis form and pattern are more common with a bleu c\u00e9leste than a green ground, which was not introduced until 1756, probably not until the autumn. The sales register for 1756 (Vy1 and Vy2) mentions numerous 'gobelet H\u00e9bert' described as' bleu c\u00e9leste et guirlandes', which may have described this pattern. Given the date of the introduction of green grounds  it seems likely that this cup and saucer could have been made in  1756 or the early part of Circular with a wide rim, and deep well, standing on a fooring with a suspension hole.  The dish is heavy for its size. The well has a turquoise (bleu c\u00e9leste) ground with a central circular reserve framed by a chased gold band. Within it is a wreath made up of branches of laurel and myrtle,  tied with a gold bow at the bottom.  At the top the branches meet on either side of a gold Imperial crown. Within the wreath is a large script E made up of pink and blue flowers in monogram with 'II' in gold, for Ekaterina II. The rim has white inner and outer borders decorated with small floral sprays separated by husks. Beween them is a broad turquoise band decorated with finely tooled gold foliated scrolls, interupted by three small oval reserves and three larger horizontal oval reserves, each painted en grisaille on a reddish-brown ground to imitate cameos. The small reserves enclose profile heads, respectively of a young woman, a young man, and Pan. The larger reserves enclose mythological scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses: Apollo and Daphne from Book 1; The competition between Apollo and Marsyas, and the Flaying of Marsyas from Book 6. The service was remarkable for its immense size, and the speed with which it was made. It was the first wholly neoclassical service to be made at S\u00e8vres, and the forms were specially designed for it, the plates for example having smooth instead of lobed rims. The use of illusionistic cameos in the decoration reflected the Empress's interest in this aspect of antique art, and innovatory techniques were used to produce them. The outlines of those on the plates were transfer-printed before painting, a technique not normally employed on S\u00e8vres porcelain. The Fitzwilliam Museum also owns a jug from the service,
