Her head is covered by a white bonnet, fastened under her chin with purple bow, and a quatrefoil 'garnet' pendant on her brow. He has short grey hair, black eyebrows, and a bushy black moustache, and wears a white short jacket with gold edging and buttons, and yellow flaps at the wrists, a green and gold sash, white trousers, and yellow top boots. Over his shoulders hangs a blue cape with a collar and lining of brown nd white fur, gold frogging, and gold ties. The low rocky base rises up a little at the back to support the figure, and is strewn with applied yellowish-green leaves and a yellow, a blue and a pink flower at the front, and a small yellow and a pink at the back. The Sultana leans back slightly, standing on her right foot with her left behind her. With her right hand she toys with a tress of her long greyish-brown hair. Her left hand is extended a little way in front of her. On her head she has a closely wound white cloth which is looped up at the back. Over a white chemise she wears a long pale yellow robe decorated with sprays of dark mauve flowers and foliage, which is fastened above the waist with two gold buttons, and has a dark pink collar and flaps at the wrists. Over this she has a long blue short-sleeved coat with white fur edging and lining. Amongst the best known of these was the Comte de Ferriol\u2019s 'Receuil de cent estampes representant diff\u00e9rentes nations du Levant. . . Paris, 1714. Another edition was printed in 1715, and a smaller German edition in two volumes with some plates reversed 'Wahrest und neueste Abbildung des T\u00fcrchisches Hofes' was published by Christoph Weigel at Nuremberg in 1719, and 1721 (with Der in front of title). The plates in the 'Receuil' were engraved by several artists from drawings made in 1707 and 1708 by Jean-Baptiste Vanmour (1671-1737), who was a member of de Ferriol\u2019s entourage during the ten years from 1699 which he spent as Louis XIV\u2019s Ambassador to the Sublime Porte. They depicted the Sultan, his Court and the various people of the Ottoman Empire who frequented Istanbul. The Sultana Asseki (the title given to the Sultan\u2019s second wife who had borne a son) Meissen model no. 1287, corresponds to pl. 3 in Weigel, vol. The flat, unglazed underside has a circular ventilation hole in the centre. The low, rounded square base is decorated around the rocky edge of the top with applied leaves and three flowers. The lady stands with her feet slightly apart. Her head is turned slightly to her left, and she holds her left hand to her breast and has her right extended to her left. She wears a close-fitting white cap almost concealing her blonde hair, a double necklace of white beads fastening at the back with a green bow, a pink bodice with a purple foliage pattern gold edging and lacing over a white chemise with the left sleeve coloured yellow. Her white skirt is scatterd with polychrome floral sprays, and has a gold belt decorated with continuous sprays of leaves, two similar strips down the front, and a plain gold band on the hem. Hanging from her shoulders at the back she has a short pale yellow cape scattered with gold leaf sprays, and turned back at the sides to reveal the white fur lining. A selection of plates from the 'Recueil' or the German edition, served as designs for a series of Meissen figures popularly known as The Levantines. They were modelled by Kaendler and Reinicke in 1749-50. In his left hand he holds the barrel of a long musket, the butt end of which rests on the ground by his side. He has a greyish-black moustache and red lips. His hair is covered by a bag-shaped hat with a dark pink and gold edge, a white shirt with dangling , a bright blue jacked with gold edges and buttons down the front, a yellow sash, dark pink baggy breeches, yellow socks, and red shoes. A brown quiver filled with arrows with red, yellow and pink flights, is held onto his back by an red strap passing over his left shoulder and under his right arm.
