Below there is an oval wreath containing 'QUESTIONS' numbered l.-5.   This is repeated on the right with the panels numbered VI-X and questions 6. -10.   The edges have gold and red borders of scrolls and flowers.  Reverse:  Linked by a bound laurel wreath there are ten medallions containing the heads and symbols of gods and goddesses, labeled above JUPITER, JUNON, APOLLON, DIANE, MARS, VENUS, BACHUS (sic), CERES, MERCURE and MINERVE. In the central cartouche, which is bordered by two shades of salmon coloured lines, a group of people are making music.  A girl is standing in front of a sofa playing the lute, another one sitting, a young gentleman is sitting in front of an open book of music on a desk, a woman behind him, and on the left there is a boy looking at a sheet of paper.  The two flanking scenes are bordered in shades of green with a gold ornament, each showing a girl sitting in contemporary dress and a figure in Turkish costume with a curtain drapery in the background.  An azure blue line with a golden leaf chain and a gold edging borders the leaf.  Back:  the whole reverse is painted with a landscape in shades of blue and brown trees and bushes in the foreground, and water, a bridge with three arches, buildings and trees in the background in very pale colours.  The leaf has a golden-red leaf and flower border, the top edging is of a paper ribbon.  Sticks:  the second sticks from either side have been mistakenly interchanged so that they do not show the circular ornament on top together with the first sticks they were supposed to show; the lower parts of the first and second sticks have slightly scrolling ornaments.  The third sticks, carved in battoire style, have a woman holding a garland over a circle with a pierced flower.  The fourth and fifth sticks form a little oval medallion bordered by a chain from bigger and smaller round-shaped elements; the two central battoire sticks have two dos on the bottom, a gentleman with a hat on the right and a lady with a lute on the right.  The reverse is undecorated. The house of Braganza was the ruling dynasty of Portugal from 1640 to 1910, and of the empire of Brazil from 1822 to 1889. On England's advice, the royal family left Lisbon for Brazil in 1807, just before the French invaded Portugal, and arrived in Brazil in early 1808. They did not return until 1821. The inscription on the fan is puzzling because there was no princess named Carolina Augusta in the Portuguese royal family. Inscribed on left side of leaf 'Oct.26. to ye late Act 1740.  Reverse:  An asymmetrically placed, sketchily painted vignette of a cottage and bushes.  Sticks and guards:  Painted with flowering plants and red diaper pattern.   The design is repeated on the back. The sticks and guards were usually made of wood, bone, ivory or tortoiseshell, and the leaves of fine skin, paper or silk. Fans with translucent mica inserts had been made since the late sixteenth century, but examples with leaves made mainly of mica are now extremely rare. Only three examples are known that are strictly comparable to this one, which is constructed of three rows of mica panels, naively painted with children, dogs, birds and rose sprays, and mounted between strips of painted and gilt paper. This example is one of over 500 fans and unmounted fan leaves, both European and Oriental, acquired from the late Anne, Countess of Rosse. They had been amassed by her father Colonel Leonard Messel (187201953), who was among the earliest English collectors to value fans for their historical and aesthetic interest rather than viewing them simply as costume accessories or family The lower edge and the left side have formal gilt borders.  Sticks:  the lower part of each is shaped and pierced to produce a row of daisy-like motifs, above which is a row of shells and a row of oval shaped pierced and carved with men playing musical instruments, putti, hounds and birds standing by baskets of fruit.  Guards:  carved in low relief below the shoulder with a man dancing, and above with a woman holding a scroll, a sunflower and an Oriental holding a spear.
