London: Philip Wilson Publishers: This severely rectilinear table was the centrepiece of a suite of furniture commissioned by Sir Nicholas Goodison for the reception area outside his office at the head office of the TSB, Milk Street, London. The other pieces were four armchairs and an octagonal occasional table, all with the same fluted decoration. They are some of the most classical of Peters’ works. The table was described in Peters’ invoice, dated 3 March 1990, as a ‘Console table in sycamore with maple panel’. Documents relating to the commission survive in the archives of Lloyds Banking Group. The original height of the table was 91.5 cm. In a note in the Lloyds archives, dated 10 October 1989, Sir Nicholas wrote ‘A[lan] thinks 36 [inches] might be just too high, that 34½ might be better. He will however make it 36 and we can saw off the bottom 1½ if it does not look right.’ It did not, and so Peters sawed off the bottom of the legs in the reception She completed an MA at the Royal College of Art, London in 1999 and established her studio in London with the aid of a Crafts Council setting-up grant in 2001. Partridge established his studio in Shropshire in 1984, and has been working in partnership with Liz Walmsley since 1988. Liz Walmsley studied at the University of Wales, intent on a career in education until she started work in a pottery and changed direction. For the past twentyfive years, Partridge and Walmsley have created a dynamic portfolio of site-specific urban and rural commissions – bridges, seats, shelters – and works for domestic interiors which have redefined the use of timber in contemporary design. Working in direct, improvisational ways, mostly with oak, they carve out forms which invite and respond to use – be they monumental blackened benches or finely turned and carved bowls. Public commissions include pieces for Sustrans; Christchurch Cathedral, Oxford (which won an art in architecture award in 2003); Warwick Arts Centre, University of Warwick; and Ardtornish Estate in Scotland. ‘Everything they do has a tremendous physical presence, a sort of monumentality, even in the smallest works, yet also a lightness and poise.’ - Richard Ingleby, Director, Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: John Ward studied Ceramics at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts establishing his first studio in London in 1970 before moving to his current studio in Wales in 1979. An early champion of his work was Henry Rothschild (1913–2009) who included him in a number of shows at his influential Primavera gallery in Cambridge, recognizing the skill and balance of the vessel forms. Works are hand-built, pinching out from the base, then flattened coils of clay are added to produce hollow shapes. Glazes and slips are applied to the surface to create a dynamic pattern which emphasises the geometry of the form. Ward cites influences from early Cypriot pottery and tenth-century Persian bowls. He also acknowledges the importance of his art school tutors who included Ian Godfrey (1942–92) and Lucie Rie (1902–95). ‘One of the pleasures of Ward’s pots is that they are made with an acute understanding of the material and process involved, which then becomes part of the total concept of the piece. The precise making is not only a joy to see but adds an essential element to the beautifully balanced form.’ - Emmanuel Cooper obe, ceramicist, author and critic. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: Jim Malone trained as a teacher in North Wales and taught in secondary schools for three years before studying Ceramics at Camberwell in 1972. On graduation, he spent a year working with Ray Finch (1914–2012) at Winchcombe Pottery and then established his first studio in North Wales, before moving to Cumbria where he still lives and works. Malone’s influences are South East Asian, thirteenth-century Chinese and sixteenthcentury Korean wares, and he works mainly in stoneware with incised or brushed decoration. His work can be best understood within the influential tradition of twentieth-century British studio ceramics spearheaded by Bernard Leach (1887–1979) and his Japanese contemporaries such as Shoji Hamada (1894–1978). Malone has been a highly respected maker within this tradition, and his works are held in many public collections. He exhibits regularly at solo and group exhibitions, and Manchester Metropolitan University has published a slide set with commentary and a video by Alex McErlain entitled Jim Malone: Artist-Potter. Jim Malone: ‘Shoji Hamada said there were two kinds of pot. The first he compared to hothouse plants, the second to a tree growing on the mountainside. The saint's head is frequently shown on a dish supported by angels, sometimes with the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) an attribute of St John, or Christ as Man of Sorrows below the dish. On other examples the head may surrounded by a group of saints, or have seated figures of saints below, and God the Father above. The panels were sold singly to provide a focus for the private devotions of their owners, and were sometimes housed in a wooden case, with painted doors which were opened while the owner was at prayer. Apart from the importance of St John as a witness of Christ’s divinity, the popularity of this subject reflected the strongly penitential aspect of late Medieval religion, and the piety of the laity, who were encouraged to relive the sufferings of Christ and the Saints while contemplating their
