In front of her is a square stone with central hole and chamfered edge. On the right is a nude woman, seated on a separate pile of rocks, looking back towards the other two figures. On the base, there is a spray of foliage above the head of a young man,  in profile to right, wearing a Phrygian cap, and a cloak, and having his right forefinger to his lips. The dowager Duchess of Portland, who purchased it from Sir William Hamilton in 1784, died in 1785, and a year later Wedgwood borrowed it from her son, the third Duke of Portland, who had bought it at the sale of his mother's collection. After studying it thoroughly, Wedgwood, his son Josiah, and his modellers Webber and Hackwood experimented for three years before the first successful copy was achieved in the late summer of 1789. The exact number of Portland Vase copies made before Wedgwood's death in 1795 is not clear. Surveys of extant vases and documents in the Wedgwood archive indicate that it was between forty and fifty, of which some were defective. This is one of only three known to have retained their original travelling The underside is glazed and has a large ventilation whole near the back. The shaped base has scrolls round the front edge, and is supported on two scroll feet at the sides and one at centre back. At the back there is a small loop handle attached to the tree trunk, on each side of which at the front there is bocage with clusters of small white May flowers, and a few larger red and puce flowers. In front of the tee stands a peacock facing to the viewer's left, with another in front of it on the ground to the left, looking towards and pecking at the jackdaw in peacock's plumage which is also on the ground. The underside is glazed, and has a small circular ventilation hole in the centre. The high base is supported on two scroll feet at the sides, and one at centre back, above which there is a loop handle with a flower on top, attached to a tall tree trunk with a candle nozzle at the top. On either side of the trunk there are many small white May flowers, and, here and there, larger blue and white, puce, white and yellow, or orange and yellow flowers of different varieties. The cock, with red, yellow, and purple plumage, stands in the centre with on the ground at his feet, a gold necklace and a pendant or brooch. On his left there is a white hen with areas of red feathers with one chick on its back and sheltering below it. On the right there is a pale brown hen with a larger white chick. On the base around them are applied flowers and leaves. The front of the base is inscribed in gold 'THE COCK & THE JE (rest illegible), and the scrolls are picked out in gold.
