Polished steel case bolt with flat shaped foot, nib through dial. Potance, with moulding at end of foot, riveted to plate. Counter-potance with shaped foot riveted to plate. Pillar plate with four Egyptian pillars with very thing slots. Under dial '4329' stamped near centre, '02' scratched on joint. Fusee and chain, tangent set-up under barrel, barrel with one lip. Hole in centre of dial filled with silver filigree plaque of a lion and unicorn supporting a plaque engraved 'TOMPION' and a central garter engraved 'HONI.SOIT.QUI.MAL.Y.PENSE' and standing on a decoration (centre removed by four intersecting holes). The gilt cherub spandrels of unusual design with crossed wings, a type which appears to have been restricted to Tompion minature clocks; Christopher Wren used a similar motif in a number of his buildings.  The narrow silvered chapter ring with the 5 minute numbers within the minute divisions and simple half hour markings.  Silvered alarm-setting disc behind the hour hand and a winding square within the chapter ring at XII for the going.  Blued steel hands of simple early design.  The dial plate with spare holes formerly used to fix a different chapter ring and one dial foot cut off.                                                                                                                                                                             Movement: 8 day timepiece movement, with quarter repeating and alarm, with latched pillars and dial feet.  Verge escapement set at about 30o to the vertical with the pendulum between the front plate and the dial, consisting of two wires in diamond formation to avoid the hour wheel pipe and with a lenticular shaped bob visible in a cut away section at the base of the dial.  Repeating quarters on a small bell and hours on a larger one, the hours 7 - 12 being repeated as 1 - 6 to save power.  The alarm train set at right angles to the going and wound through a hole in the right-hand case fret.  The movement withdrawn from the case from below after sliding forward the bottom front moulding, necessitated by the very close fit of the movement in the case.                                                                                                                                                                                Case: Blued steel with gilt metal mouldings, basket top and frets in side and rear openings.  The basket top and frets of scrolling acanthus design. The door with silver moulding round glass and silver escutcheon.  The case has no rear opening. Tompion Lon\u00acdon'.  Winding squares, inside chapter ring at VI for going and outside chapter ring at I for alarm.  Rear of dial has swivel latch at 10.30 to fit slot in case now broken away.  Typical blued steel hands.\n\nMovement: Eight day timepiece movement, with quarter repeating and alarm.  Repeating now defective, vari\u00acous parts removed and action modified to repeat hours only on small bell which was originally for quarters.  Original verge escapement replaced with anchor and heavy Vulliamy-type pendulum, (was he responsible for the conversion?).  It is interesting to note that Vuilliamy's day books record work carried out on two Tompion clocks of this type.  On 31st December 1803 \u2018Cleaned a Spring Silent Pull and Alarm name Tompion' for a Mrs Joy and on 31st May 1806 cleaned another `Silent Pull with Alarm' and repaired the case for a Mr Campbell.  Back plate engraved with tulip design, signed \u2018Tho Tompion Londini Fecit' just below centre; numbered 15 twice, in early position near top left hand corner and in later, standard position at centre of base.\n\nCase: Oak veneered with ebony, which has had the dome section modified.  The movement is so tall that it cannot be taken out of the case without hav\u00acing removed the top section of the latter.  This is now secured from inside by four long screws, the two front ones being almost inac\u00accessible, but rebates in the body of the case indicate that the dome section was originally hinged at the front.  The dome, which has a very unusual frieze section has been rebuilt and it is now difficult to say whether the frieze portion was part of the original design.  It may have been required to accommodate the hour bell and other repeating parts now removed.  The present screwed and glued block feet are not original and a brass plate with threaded hole which is fixed to the centre of the case bottom presumably indicates that there was originally a turntable base.  The carrying handle, dome mounts and escutcheons of gilt brass appear to be original but the frieze frets in both body and dome could be later. Narrow chapter ring with silver overlay, engraved I - XII twice, with the five minute numbers within the minute divisions and simple half hour markings.  The day of the month is shown in a square aperture above the chapter ring.  Signed at the base of the dial \u2018Thomas Tompion, Londini Fecit'.  The whole of the space inside the chapter ring occupied by an astrolabe disc or rete of gilt brass with two applied silver rings.  The space behind the rete has lines of equal altitude above a curved horizon line, the empty space between painted in blue, and below it a partially obliterated cartouche and the word \u2018crepusculum'.  This lower area had at some time been painted blue; this has now been removed.  The minute hand of blued steel rotates once per hour and the hour hand, also of blued steel and with a gilt effigy of the sun, rotates once in 24 hours.  The third hand, which bears an effigy of the moon, indicates lunar time.  The astrolabe disc rotates once per sidereal day and has at its centre a dial which shows age and phase of the moon and high tide at London Bridge.  The astronomical indications are discussed in some detail by Symonds.\n\nMovement: Month duration movement with four wheel trains necessitating an indirect drive to the minute hand as with many 30 hour longcase clocks (usually known as \"shake minutes\").  It is evident that the move\u00acment was made for a conventional clock and was modified to accommodate the astrolabe dial; this is shown by the extensions to the plates, provided to carry the indirect winding, necessary to avoid the winding squares fouling the rete, and by spare dial feet holes behind the winding wheels.  A very early movement, probably c. 1675-80, not of Tompion's usual quality and with the first form of anchor escapement with undercut front faces to the escape wheel teeth.  Bolt type maintaining power is provided but without shutters to the winding holes, these were probably removed when the movement was modified.  It has the long crutch and oval section brass pendulum rod typical of Tompion's work.  The movement is not numbered.\n\nCase: Oak carcase veneered with olive wood and with olive wood mouldings, with small panels of simple marquetry probably c.1680.  According to Dawson who restored the case some years ago, the centre panel in the trunk door is laid over signs of previous chopped-in inlay decoration.  Trunk door full width between sides, with battens tongued and grooved, and reproduction hinges.  Hood probably reconverted to slide up and with reproduction carved cresting said by Symonds to have probably been copied from the 30 hour Tompion case in Guildhall Museum.  Replaced bun feet. The rectangular section of the dial plate extended above the chapter ring to accommodate the signature \u2018Tho. Tompion & Edw. Banger London', flanked by scrolled engraving and two silvered sub\u00acsidiary dials, the left hand one for pen\u00acdulum rise and fall adjustment, the right hand one engraved \u2018Str 6\/Sil 6 Str 1\/Sil 1' to provide for silencing the quarter chiming only or both chiming and hour striking.  The silvered chapter ring with typical cross-type half hour markings and the half quarters marked with simple crosses in the minute band.  In the arch a simple calendar showing through curved slots the days of the week, each with its appropri\u00acate deity, and the days of the month.  Blued steel hands of typical Tompion design.\n\nMovement: 8 day three train grande sonnerie movement, chiming the quarters on six bells; repeating hours and quarters by release.  The movement with latched pillars and dial feet, and visible steel work nicely blued.  Verge escapement with spring suspended pen\u00acdulum having lenticular shaped bob and regulated through rack and pinion rise and fall mechanism.  Several minor parts provided to ensure accurate operation of the striking and repeating mechanism are now mising. The back plate engraved with scroll\u00acing foliage, trophies and a basket of flowers, and signed in a cartouche `Tho.Tompion & Edw.Banger London'.  Numbered `436' at bottom centre of plate with number repeated in same position on front plate, a rare feature. Original pierced and engraved winding key.\n\nCase: Oak veneered with turtle shell with red backing and with fine quality, elaborate, gilt metal mounts.  The case very much in the French manner, possibly reflecting the influence of Daniel Marot.  It has a plain back and solid oak door, which suggests that it was designed to stand on a matching bracket as was often the case with French clocks.  It is per\u00achaps signif\u00acicant that there are no carrying handles.  Both clock and case are almost identical with No.422, signed \u2018Tho.Tompion', although the latter lacks two mounts, one below the door and the other on the domed top.  The case has metal mouldings and door frame and is surmounted by a finely modelled figure of an archer, probably Apollo.  There are metal frets incorporating cherubs supporting carthouches in the frieze and scrolling acanthus foliage in the side windows, the frieze being sup\u00acported by four female terms.  Below the door is a fine mount consisting of a satyr's head flanked by two cherubs, the left hand one holding a clock and the right hand one holding a globe with mathematical instruments.  This mount is also used on an earlier grand sonnerie clock, No.217. The movement is of year duration."},{"value":"Dial: Dial plate 12 inches by 16 7\/8 inches high, with spandrels and chapter ring within an engraved line 11 1\/4 inches square.  Silvered chapter ring engraved I-XII twice and 5-60 twice with minute and half minute divisions outside the minute numbers and half hour divisions on the inner edge.  The chapter ring engraved near the top with \u2018EQUAL TIME' and with fleur de lys type half hour marks.  It is mounted on the matted dial centre which is supported on three dial feet independently of the dial plate.  Surrounding the chapter ring is a rotating minute ring with divisions and numbers as on the chapter ring and inscribed at the top \u2018APPARET TIME'.  The spandrels are of a cherub and flower design (Cescinsky & Webster, No.7) introduced by Tompion and used mainly by him.  Between the spandrels fine scrolling foliage is engraved and at the lower edge \u2018THO. TOMPION.LONDON.INVENT.' Curved openings below the dial centre show the days of the week, each with its appropriate deity.  Similar openings above the chapter ring display an annual calendar and the sun's position in the zodiac.  Finely pierced steel hands, the minute hand being accurately balanced and having a gilt tip to point to apparent time.\n\nMovement: The year timepiece movement has no seat board but rests directly on metal plates on the tops of the reinforced sides of the case.  The movement is inverted, with the escapement at the bottom, and is made in two sections with the barrel assembly and the second wheel in a small frame to the rear.  The remainder of the train and all the calendar and equation work are mounted on the large front plate.  Bolt and shutter maintaining power is fitted to protect the delicate escapement and is operated by a lever on the right hand side of the dial.  The equation cam, on the same arbor as the annual calendar, is driven by a vertical arbor from the motion work.  A bell crank which follows the cam carries a rack which engages with a wheel at the centre of the apparent time ring and moves it backwards or forwards as required.\n\nCase: Has an oak carcase veneered with burr walnut and with narrow herring-bone bandings.  The skirting appears to be original.  The case has a rising hood, originally without a door and with acanthus design side frets of walnut veneer.  The very elaborate superstructure appears to be of slightly different carcase wood and to be slightly later in date than the rest of the hood.  A disturbing feature of the case is that, with the hood door closed, both calendar and zodiac slots are covered and when the door is opened only the calendar slot is visible.  Arising from a consideration of these peculiarities it is suggested that the hood, originally without a door, had only a modest-sized superstructure.  Traces remain of the spoon lock for securing the hood and the catch for holding it in the raised position.  The hood would have had to be raised for winding or adjusting the clock when both calendar and zodiac slots would have been visible.  It is quite probable that the original customer wanted a more imposing clock in keeping with a lofty room and the large caddy top with its elaborate mounts was then provided.  The hood thus became too unwieldy to raise for winding or setting the clock so a door was made.\n\nThe trunk door has its original iron lock and hinges, exceptionally three in number.  The remain\u00acing mounts are of gilt brass and include fine vase and urn finials, a central figure of a warrior, probably Mars, and fine repouss\u00e9 frieze frets consisting of strapwork and of floral scrolls wtih central female mask and cherub heads at the corners.  Like other special clocks the trunk door has tiny metal spandrels in the corners. Apart from the upper parts of the hoods the cases are virtually identical."},{"value":"This clock is said to have been supplied by Tompion to Drayton House, which Lady Mary Mordaunt, Duchess of Norfolk inherited from her father in 1697. Lady Mary had separated from the Duke of Norfolk and formed a liason with Sir John Germane, whom she married after being divorced from the Duke in 1700. She died in 1705. In 1718 when Sir John died, the house was inherited by his second wife, Lady Betty Germaine. An inventory of the contents of Drayton House taken in 1710 mentions 'In the Great Hall itself . . . One Clock', and an inventory of 1724 mentions 'No. 36 In the great Hall . . . 1 large clock', which might have referred to this
