Narrow chapter ring with silver overlay, engraved I - XII twice, with the five minute numbers within the minute divisions and simple half hour markings.  The day of the month is shown in a square aperture above the chapter ring.  Signed at the base of the dial \u2018Thomas Tompion, Londini Fecit'.  The whole of the space inside the chapter ring occupied by an astrolabe disc or rete of gilt brass with two applied silver rings.  The space behind the rete has lines of equal altitude above a curved horizon line, the empty space between painted in blue, and below it a partially obliterated cartouche and the word \u2018crepusculum'.  This lower area had at some time been painted blue; this has now been removed.  The minute hand of blued steel rotates once per hour and the hour hand, also of blued steel and with a gilt effigy of the sun, rotates once in 24 hours.  The third hand, which bears an effigy of the moon, indicates lunar time.  The astrolabe disc rotates once per sidereal day and has at its centre a dial which shows age and phase of the moon and high tide at London Bridge.  The astronomical indications are discussed in some detail by Symonds.\n\nMovement: Month duration movement with four wheel trains necessitating an indirect drive to the minute hand as with many 30 hour longcase clocks (usually known as \"shake minutes\").  It is evident that the move\u00acment was made for a conventional clock and was modified to accommodate the astrolabe dial; this is shown by the extensions to the plates, provided to carry the indirect winding, necessary to avoid the winding squares fouling the rete, and by spare dial feet holes behind the winding wheels.  A very early movement, probably c. 1675-80, not of Tompion's usual quality and with the first form of anchor escapement with undercut front faces to the escape wheel teeth.  Bolt type maintaining power is provided but without shutters to the winding holes, these were probably removed when the movement was modified.  It has the long crutch and oval section brass pendulum rod typical of Tompion's work.  The movement is not numbered.\n\nCase: Oak carcase veneered with olive wood and with olive wood mouldings, with small panels of simple marquetry probably c.1680.  According to Dawson who restored the case some years ago, the centre panel in the trunk door is laid over signs of previous chopped-in inlay decoration.  Trunk door full width between sides, with battens tongued and grooved, and reproduction hinges.  Hood probably reconverted to slide up and with reproduction carved cresting said by Symonds to have probably been copied from the 30 hour Tompion case in Guildhall Museum.  Replaced bun feet. Chapter disc, calendar ring and age of moon ring all of fired enamel, with 'Wm. Dutton London' (m raised) inscribed on the centre of the chapter disc. A calendar ring in the arch rotates once per year and indicates days of month, months, and signs of zodiac each divided into 30 degrees, and times of sunrise. Inside this ring is a separate one which shows the age of the moon with each day divided into four. The phases of the moon are indicated by a rotating sphere with one half silvered and the other half painted dark blue. Mean time is shown by a pair of delicately pierced blued steel hands, and solar time is indicated directly by a gilt brass minute hand bearing an effigy of the sun. The right hand winding square is for winding the movement, the left hand one for setting the calendar.                                                                                                                                                          Movement: Four latched pillars to month timepiece movement with inverted train, escapement at the bottom to make room for the calendar and equation work. Dead beat escapement with Harrison type maintaining power and end plates to pivots of train and motion work. The drive to the calendar is taken from the first pinion of the train by a large wheel mounted with a clutch on the arbor with a squared end for resetting the calendar. The arbor carrying the calendar ring rotates once per year, and the calendar ring rotates once per year, and has mounted on its rear end the balanced equation cam. A bell crank follows the periphery of the cam, and has a rack which engages with a pinion connected to a differential gear assembly forming part of the motion work. The output from the differntial gear causes the solar time minute hand to move relative to the mean time minute hand. The screw on the hour wheel pipe which drives a vertical arbor mounted on the back of the dial. A pinion at the top of the arbor drives the moon through a spring clutch, and a bevel wheelon the moon arbor drives the age of moon ring. The pendulum has a nine rod gridiron compemnsation with a heavy bob and a regulating nut with thirty numbered divisions. The pendulum is suspended from a bracket on the seat board.                                                                                                                                                      Case: Mahogany caracase with fine mahogany veneer. Break-arch hood with reeded chamfered corners and panels formed in sides with applied mouldings. Sides of trunk originally cut away inside to permit swing of a very large pendulum bob in narow case, only 11 \u00bd inches outside measurement. The movement is of year duration."},{"value":"Dial: Dial plate 12 inches by 16 7\/8 inches high, with spandrels and chapter ring within an engraved line 11 1\/4 inches square.  Silvered chapter ring engraved I-XII twice and 5-60 twice with minute and half minute divisions outside the minute numbers and half hour divisions on the inner edge.  The chapter ring engraved near the top with \u2018EQUAL TIME' and with fleur de lys type half hour marks.  It is mounted on the matted dial centre which is supported on three dial feet independently of the dial plate.  Surrounding the chapter ring is a rotating minute ring with divisions and numbers as on the chapter ring and inscribed at the top \u2018APPARET TIME'.  The spandrels are of a cherub and flower design (Cescinsky & Webster, No.7) introduced by Tompion and used mainly by him.  Between the spandrels fine scrolling foliage is engraved and at the lower edge \u2018THO. TOMPION.LONDON.INVENT.' Curved openings below the dial centre show the days of the week, each with its appropriate deity.  Similar openings above the chapter ring display an annual calendar and the sun's position in the zodiac.  Finely pierced steel hands, the minute hand being accurately balanced and having a gilt tip to point to apparent time.\n\nMovement: The year timepiece movement has no seat board but rests directly on metal plates on the tops of the reinforced sides of the case.  The movement is inverted, with the escapement at the bottom, and is made in two sections with the barrel assembly and the second wheel in a small frame to the rear.  The remainder of the train and all the calendar and equation work are mounted on the large front plate.  Bolt and shutter maintaining power is fitted to protect the delicate escapement and is operated by a lever on the right hand side of the dial.  The equation cam, on the same arbor as the annual calendar, is driven by a vertical arbor from the motion work.  A bell crank which follows the cam carries a rack which engages with a wheel at the centre of the apparent time ring and moves it backwards or forwards as required.\n\nCase: Has an oak carcase veneered with burr walnut and with narrow herring-bone bandings.  The skirting appears to be original.  The case has a rising hood, originally without a door and with acanthus design side frets of walnut veneer.  The very elaborate superstructure appears to be of slightly different carcase wood and to be slightly later in date than the rest of the hood.  A disturbing feature of the case is that, with the hood door closed, both calendar and zodiac slots are covered and when the door is opened only the calendar slot is visible.  Arising from a consideration of these peculiarities it is suggested that the hood, originally without a door, had only a modest-sized superstructure.  Traces remain of the spoon lock for securing the hood and the catch for holding it in the raised position.  The hood would have had to be raised for winding or adjusting the clock when both calendar and zodiac slots would have been visible.  It is quite probable that the original customer wanted a more imposing clock in keeping with a lofty room and the large caddy top with its elaborate mounts was then provided.  The hood thus became too unwieldy to raise for winding or setting the clock so a door was made.\n\nThe trunk door has its original iron lock and hinges, exceptionally three in number.  The remain\u00acing mounts are of gilt brass and include fine vase and urn finials, a central figure of a warrior, probably Mars, and fine repouss\u00e9 frieze frets consisting of strapwork and of floral scrolls wtih central female mask and cherub heads at the corners.  Like other special clocks the trunk door has tiny metal spandrels in the corners.
