Narrow chapter ring with silver overlay, engraved I - XII twice, with the five minute numbers within the minute divisions and simple half hour markings.  The day of the month is shown in a square aperture above the chapter ring.  Signed at the base of the dial \u2018Thomas Tompion, Londini Fecit'.  The whole of the space inside the chapter ring occupied by an astrolabe disc or rete of gilt brass with two applied silver rings.  The space behind the rete has lines of equal altitude above a curved horizon line, the empty space between painted in blue, and below it a partially obliterated cartouche and the word \u2018crepusculum'.  This lower area had at some time been painted blue; this has now been removed.  The minute hand of blued steel rotates once per hour and the hour hand, also of blued steel and with a gilt effigy of the sun, rotates once in 24 hours.  The third hand, which bears an effigy of the moon, indicates lunar time.  The astrolabe disc rotates once per sidereal day and has at its centre a dial which shows age and phase of the moon and high tide at London Bridge.  The astronomical indications are discussed in some detail by Symonds.\n\nMovement: Month duration movement with four wheel trains necessitating an indirect drive to the minute hand as with many 30 hour longcase clocks (usually known as \"shake minutes\").  It is evident that the move\u00acment was made for a conventional clock and was modified to accommodate the astrolabe dial; this is shown by the extensions to the plates, provided to carry the indirect winding, necessary to avoid the winding squares fouling the rete, and by spare dial feet holes behind the winding wheels.  A very early movement, probably c. 1675-80, not of Tompion's usual quality and with the first form of anchor escapement with undercut front faces to the escape wheel teeth.  Bolt type maintaining power is provided but without shutters to the winding holes, these were probably removed when the movement was modified.  It has the long crutch and oval section brass pendulum rod typical of Tompion's work.  The movement is not numbered.\n\nCase: Oak carcase veneered with olive wood and with olive wood mouldings, with small panels of simple marquetry probably c.1680.  According to Dawson who restored the case some years ago, the centre panel in the trunk door is laid over signs of previous chopped-in inlay decoration.  Trunk door full width between sides, with battens tongued and grooved, and reproduction hinges.  Hood probably reconverted to slide up and with reproduction carved cresting said by Symonds to have probably been copied from the 30 hour Tompion case in Guildhall Museum.  Replaced bun feet. The rectangular section of the dial plate extended above the chapter ring to accommodate the signature \u2018Tho. Tompion & Edw. Banger London', flanked by scrolled engraving and two silvered sub\u00acsidiary dials, the left hand one for pen\u00acdulum rise and fall adjustment, the right hand one engraved \u2018Str 6\/Sil 6 Str 1\/Sil 1' to provide for silencing the quarter chiming only or both chiming and hour striking.  The silvered chapter ring with typical cross-type half hour markings and the half quarters marked with simple crosses in the minute band.  In the arch a simple calendar showing through curved slots the days of the week, each with its appropri\u00acate deity, and the days of the month.  Blued steel hands of typical Tompion design.\n\nMovement: 8 day three train grande sonnerie movement, chiming the quarters on six bells; repeating hours and quarters by release.  The movement with latched pillars and dial feet, and visible steel work nicely blued.  Verge escapement with spring suspended pen\u00acdulum having lenticular shaped bob and regulated through rack and pinion rise and fall mechanism.  Several minor parts provided to ensure accurate operation of the striking and repeating mechanism are now mising. The back plate engraved with scroll\u00acing foliage, trophies and a basket of flowers, and signed in a cartouche `Tho.Tompion & Edw.Banger London'.  Numbered `436' at bottom centre of plate with number repeated in same position on front plate, a rare feature. Original pierced and engraved winding key.\n\nCase: Oak veneered with turtle shell with red backing and with fine quality, elaborate, gilt metal mounts.  The case very much in the French manner, possibly reflecting the influence of Daniel Marot.  It has a plain back and solid oak door, which suggests that it was designed to stand on a matching bracket as was often the case with French clocks.  It is per\u00achaps signif\u00acicant that there are no carrying handles.  Both clock and case are almost identical with No.422, signed \u2018Tho.Tompion', although the latter lacks two mounts, one below the door and the other on the domed top.  The case has metal mouldings and door frame and is surmounted by a finely modelled figure of an archer, probably Apollo.  There are metal frets incorporating cherubs supporting carthouches in the frieze and scrolling acanthus foliage in the side windows, the frieze being sup\u00acported by four female terms.  Below the door is a fine mount consisting of a satyr's head flanked by two cherubs, the left hand one holding a clock and the right hand one holding a globe with mathematical instruments.  This mount is also used on an earlier grand sonnerie clock, No.217.
