The underside is  flat and unglazed.                                                                  The shallow roughly six-sided base is white with three areas dappled in green and yellow. At the back there is a large pale grey pack with pale brown cording against which the figure is supported. The pedlar steps forward on his right foot, supporting his back pack with his left arm, and resting his right on a duck against the larger pack on the ground behind him. A walking stick rests against his hand. He has grey hair, delicately tinted pink cheeks and lips, and black eyes. He wears a pale yellow broad-brimmed hat, a white ruffle round his neck, a white shirt, pale purple jacket, black belt, green breeches and red shoes with yellow bows. The edges of his shirt sleeves and jacket are gilded. The unglazed underside has a large D-shaped ventilation hole at the back opening into the glazed interior of the tree stump.  The shallow base has two angles at the back, a curve on the proper right side, and two angles on the left. It rises up at the back into a low rock with a tall tree stump beside it. The gentleman stands on his left leg with his right advanced, resting his left elbow on the tree stum and holding a book to his chest in the other hand. He leans forward slightly and looks towards his right. His hair is dressed with curls at the sides and a long queue at the back. He wears a shirt with ruffles, a waistcoat, breeches, a cloak with two applied escallop shells on the front and back, and shoes with bows on top. A gourd or bulbous flask is slung at his right side by a strap over his left shoulder, and under his left arm he has a hat and collecting The middle of the underside is glazed, and the outer edge unglazed. There is a small round ventilation hole near the back.                     The low base is of rounded square form, narrower at the back than at the front. The top is undecorated and round the edge is a scalloped gold border with spots above the cusps. It rises up at the back into a pale sandy-brown trunk with gold hinges. The pedlar stands on his right leg with the left advanced, looking towards the viewer. He supports a tray of trinkets with his right hand, and holds his left by his side. He has ruddy cheeks, red lips and grey hair, and wears a black peaked cap and necktie, a pale yellow coat, long pink waistcoat with white reveres, pink breeches, and black shoes with green pom-poms. A green and white marbled box with lid raised is suspended at waist level from a pale blue strap.
