This group was modelled in 1766 and put into production in 1767 under the direction of Jean-Jacques Bachelier, his successor  as director of the sculpture workshop between 1766 and 1773. The terre cuite (terracotta) model is preserved in the Mus\u00e9e national de C\u00e9ramique, S\u00e8vres (MNC 7737). The group shows a gardener, Jacquot, and his lover Colette from a play, 'La F\u00eate au Ch\u00e2teau' by Charles-Simon Favart or his wife, which was commissioned by Mme de Mauconseil to celebrate the recovery of her daughter after an illness. The premier took place at the Villa de Bagatelle before the old king of Poland, Stanislas. The play was performed four times at Versailles and once at the Trianon, and entered the repertoire of the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre-Italien on 25 September 1766. The first biscuit group sold cost 144 livres (AMNS, Vy4, fo 135). The group was often sold paired with another, 'La f\u00e9e Urg\u00e8le', the title of an op\u00e9ra comique  with libretto by Favart.  This particular group is marked with an incised B which may be that of Bachelier, but could be interpreted as the Bo mark of his successor, Louis-Simon Boizot between 1775-70."},{"value":"Unglazed biscuit porcelain was introduced at Vincennes from 1751, and production continued after the factory moved in S\u00e8vres in the late summer of 1756. The cup has straight sides which curve inwards slightly at the base, and an ear-shaped  handle. The circular saucer has sloping sides and a flat centre. There is a suspension hole in the footrim of the saucer. The cup is decorated with a bird in a tree, with one bird in flight on each side, and has a dentilated gold rim, a gold line round the base, and lines on the sides of the handle. The centre of the saucer is decorated with two buildings in a landscape, and on the sides with three birds in flight. The edge is encircled by a dentilated gold band. II) suggests may be the form described as gobelet 'couvert' et soucoupe, but lacking its cover. If so, this would be the first size which without its cover measured between 6.4 to 7 cm, with, a saucer of the form normally accompanying a gobelet litron, between 12.8 and 14.5 cm in diameter. This one has a gobelet litron style handle of Savill\u2019s shape C, and a litron saucer.The gobelet couvert might also have a Bouillard shape saucer. Savill notes that examples are known from 1753 to c. There are bands of gilding round the foot of the cup and of the saucer and dentilated bands round the lip of the cup, the outer edge of the saucer and the edge of the well. It was made in three sizes with a plain or cinquefoil-shaped saucer. This is the second size. The form had been introduced by October 1752, when \u20187 Gobelets h\u00e9bert\u2019 and \u20184 Soucoupes Id[em]\u2019were included in a list of biscuit objects awaiting glazing at the beginning of the biscuit firing register. (Bibl. Institute de France, MS 5673 )  The third size followed in 1754. For the association of this type of cup with the name 'gobelet H\u00e9bert' see Eriksen, 1968 (see documentation).\n\nThis form and pattern are more common with a bleu c\u00e9leste than a green ground, which was not introduced until 1756, probably not until the autumn. The sales register for 1756 (Vy1 and Vy2) mentions numerous 'gobelet H\u00e9bert' described as' bleu c\u00e9leste et guirlandes', which may have described this pattern. Given the date of the introduction of green grounds  it seems likely that this cup and saucer could have been made in  1756 or the early part of The cup is of truncated conical form with two loop handles, foliated at the upper and lower ends. The domed cover is surmounted by a finial in the shape of a multi-petalled flower and three leaves. The saucer is circular with a flat base and deep, sloping sides. There is a suspension hole in the interior edge of the cover, and in the footring.                       On one side of the cup there are two exotic birds perched in a tree with mosses, grasses, and a flowering plant at its foot. On the other side is a tree in the branches of which is a nest containing three nestlings, and a parent bird. Another bird stands on the ground amid similar flora. On the cover there are two landscapes each with a bird standing on the ground, and two flying birds in the spaces between them, one carrying a branch in its beak. On the saucer there are three landscapes, two with a bird on the ground, and a bird perched in a tree,  and one with a bird standing on the ground. In the middle, there are  three flying birds, one carrying a branch in its beak. There is a plain gold band round the base of the cup and dentilated gold bands round the rim of all three pieces.
