The handle, finial and semi-translucent body of this example confirm that it was not made by Dunderdale (see Cox). The peasant scene, probably taken from a contemporary print, is also to be found on C.1277 & A-1928. These two teapots may thus come from the same maker; they also have similarly modelled finials of a design which could perhaps link them to Chetham & Woolley. However, variations between different factories were often slight and popular sprig moulds were sometimes copied. The other scene has been variously identified as Flora, Cupid and Prudence or the marriage of Cupid & Psyche (Rachkam, Edwards Roussel)."},{"value":"The Castleford Pottery in Yorkshire, run by David Dunderdale & Co. from 1790 to1821, was renowned for its white felspathic stoneware, and thus teapots from this material have become known as \u2018Castleford-type teapots\u2019. However, other factories made similar wares, including Sowter & co of Mexborough in Yorkshire and Chetham & Woolley of Longton in Staffordshire. Examples are typically plain white or white with edges lined in blue or another colour, or black basalt. The smear-glazing makes the most of the crisply-moulded ornament, whilst the stoneware would be durable in an everyday setting. The teapots are moulded in two parts, with applied handle and sprig decoration, and may have a drop-in, sliding or hinged cover. The reliefs on this example have been identified as 'Sportive Love', 'Cupids with Torches', 'Jove with an Eagle', and 'The Power of Love'. All four are commonly found on wares by Chetham and Woolley, and the engine turning pattern around the lower part is also typically found on their products. Thus, although unmarked, the basin was probably made by Chetham and Woolley, of Commerce Street, Longton, Staffordshire. It was perhaps originally made to celebrate Nelson\u2019s victory over the French navy at the Battle of the Nile in 1798 when Howe was Admiral of the Fleet, which would also explain the Egyptian-style obelisk. The style of vase suggests a date of 1800-1815 and the classical border is typical of that found on Chetham & Woolley wares at this time (Wyman, p.78). The vase is identified as 'MIST- type' because its decorative style is similar to that of pieces marked by the London retailer James Mist."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106498","uid":"adlib-term-106498","uuid":"272179a1-524b-3f36-aab7-bf342ce484d6"},"summary_title":"19th Century, Early"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107437","uid":"adlib-term-107437","uuid":"96f4b0d1-fc11-39ff-ae91-1b23d888d479"},"summary_title":"George III"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-110418","uid":"adlib-term-110418","uuid":"05d711c6-8b77-3dc8-801e-fbc4d8c52049"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"England"}],"summary_title":"England","type":"country"},{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"Staffordshire"}],"summary_title":"Staffordshire","type":"region"}]],"summary_title":"Longton"}]}]},"materials":[{"note":[{"value":"white"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42825","uid":"adlib-term-42825","uuid":"858e5d17-b554-33d6-936f-25b16f72f39d"},"summary_title":"stoneware"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"15.2"}]},"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-89480","uid":"adlib-term-89480","uuid":"f1ea518e-351c-3f42-b2a7-db0f8559fa2c"},"summary_title":"vase"},"type":"object name"},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-130709","uid":"adlib-term-130709","uuid":"c4c1c6af-f941-3cb8-81b5-bb1410ea644a"},"summary_title":"Mist-type"},"type":"category"}],"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"Purchased from Mr Derek Taylor, OBE"}],"objects":[{"@link":{"cascade":true,"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"object-75579","uid":"adlib-object-75579","uuid":"bd9b0ebc-5af7-3f22-8420-3725adcee9d8"},"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"impact":true,"type":"reference","workflow":true},"admin":{"id":"term-90710","uid":"adlib-term-90710","uuid":"035a5af3-9d2e-36b1-a161-2805e1bed8b8"},"summary_title":"slop bowl"}},"summary_title":"slop bowl"},{"@link":{"cascade":true,"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"object-74780","uid":"adlib-object-74780","uuid":"0da17606-f32b-3798-b8bf-e04c23a88245"},"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"impact":true,"type":"reference","workflow":true},"admin":{"id":"term-91188","uid":"adlib-term-91188","uuid":"40f320f4-04b6-3303-8129-f9e81e2b4671"},"summary_title":"mug"}},"summary_title":"mug"},{"@link":{"cascade":true,"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"object-71712","uid":"adlib-object-71712","uuid":"a096b854-ff82-33b1-b854-28ddf34892be"},"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"impact":true,"type":"reference","workflow":true},"admin":{"id":"term-91394","uid":"adlib-term-91394","uuid":"2bb189d3-6008-3a4e-abbb-eb2a240e0739"},"summary_title":"teapot"}},"summary_title":"teapot"},{"@link":{"cascade":true,"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"object-71714","uid":"adlib-object-71714","uuid":"93cefc3c-356d-3134-a1e4-751008fcbc97"},"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"impact":true,"type":"reference","workflow":true},"admin":{"id":"term-91394","uid":"adlib-term-91394","uuid":"2bb189d3-6008-3a4e-abbb-eb2a240e0739"},"summary_title":"teapot"}},"summary_title":"teapot"}],"owners":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"publications":[{"@link":{"notes":"Cf. p.72, pl.102 for two similarly shaped and decorated vases, one with brown ground, of similar size and with the same band of sprigs around the rim and another (also shown in pls..92, 109) 19cm tall with blue ground and the same sprigs around both rim and foot.
