The base is rectangular with incurved sides. Applied to its top is a shallow oval  area of ground with on its left end a low stone or tree stump on which the Spinario is seated. He has shoulder-length hair curling back from his forehead, and is nude apart from a flower which conceals his genitals. He has his right leg outstretched and his left raised and bent at the knee so that the foot rests on his right thigh. The  lady (on the viewer's right) has her right arm around the gentleman's waist, and his left arm is around her shoulder with the hand resting on the left side of her head The gentleman is seated with his legs crossed. He has raised her skirt to reveal her right lower leg, and the lady places her hand on his as if to prevent further advances - or perhaps to encourage them? She wears a round cap, a jacket with elbow-length sleeves, and three ribbons across her stomacher, over a long full skirt. He wears a cravat and shirt, a waistcoat ,and a coat with eight buttons over knee-length breeches. The tea shrub was also copied on an octagonal English delftware tea caddy in the Fitzwilliam Museum, C.1536-1928.
