Below them is an impressed inscription, 'SPORTIVE INNOCCENCE' .On the other two sides there is a similar heart enclosing  a relief of a child holding out a bearded male mask  to frighten a little girl who has fallen to the ground and raises her left hand to push it away. Below is the impressed inscription, 'MISCHIEVOUS SPORT'.  In each of the lower spaces outside the heart outlines there is a painted sprig, and above one, a moth or butterfly. Painted round the top of three sides is the inscription, Eliz.th (th raised) Taylor\/Born march\/18th. However, it has since been demonstrated that the plaque in fact shows Elizabeth Canning, who was at the centre of a controversial trial that captured public imagination in the 1750s. In 1753, Mary Squires, a \u2018Gypsy\u2019, was condemned for robbing the 18 year old Canning and imprisoning her in a house of ill fame for a month. However, Canning\u2019s testimony was called into question, leading to her conviction for perjury on 8 May 1754; she was sentenced to transportation to America. Various depictions of the case and its protagonists were printed in illustrated publications of the day, including bust-length portraits of Canning and Squires engraved by Benjamin Cole for The New Universal Magazine in 1754; Cole\u2019s portrait of Canning was the source for this plaque. The Henry H. Weldon collection has two copies of this plaque, one of which is part of pair with another plaque derived from Cole\u2019s portrait of Squires."},{"value":"The plaque was attributed by Rackham to Staffordshire. Grigsby also attributed the similar plaques in the Weldon collection to Staffordshire. However, more recently, it has been suggested by Hillier (1996) that the plaque could have been produced at the Indeo Pottery at Bovey Tracey in Devon, c.1770. At the back of the base is a tree with lateral branches bearing applied leaves and at the top, four perching birds.  A cow standing in front of it with its head looking towards the viewer, is being milked into a bucket by a woman seated on a three-legged stool. She wears a bodice and skirt, and a flat wide-brimmed hat, and leans her head against the cow's flank as she milks. This attribution seems to be supported by a statement about its former owner, Baroness von H\u00fcgel in Dr Glaisher's MS Catalogue entry for it: 'The Baron\u2019s wife was a Miss Froude and she came from the Midlands and the three pieces were family possessions which she had known as a little girl and this made her still more reluctant to part with them. ' However, another comparable creamware group, differing in the height of the base,  and position of the small figure, and bocage, has three flowers on the front of the base which resemble those on a tea caddy in the Fitzwilliam, attributed to Bovey Tracey on the basis of the name inscribed on it.  This group may therefore have come from Bovey
