Squared loop handle with spurs projecting up at the top and down near the bottom. Smear glazed on the outside. On each side of the body, convex vertical strips separate slightly translucent, convex rectangular panels. The central panels are each decorated with a classical female figure, one holding a cornucopia, the other a garland which is draped around a vase and pedestal. Around the lower part of the body is a strip of upward pointing leaves; the other panels, strips and shoulder are decorated with flowering foliage and acanthus. The gallery has a scalloped edge and is decorated with a daisy chain. The cover has a similar partial gallery, made to fit the other when slid into place, and a central finial moulded as a flower sitting on a bed of leaves; around the edge is a strip of inward facing pointed leaves and stylised acanthus; there is a vent hole to one side. A narrow blue line marks the edges of the panels, handle and spout and the leaves under the finial, separates the main panels horizontally into two and outlines each daisy on the gallery. White felspathic stoneware, smear glazed on the outside, and painted in blue enamel. There are three flat panels on each side of the body, separated by a thin arched line. The side panels each contain a stylised flower enclosed in a diamond . On one side the central panel shows six peasants wearing caps, gathered around a barrel; one is seated with a book, another plays bag-pipes. On the other side are four semi-clothed figures, with horse and tree. Around the lower part of the body is a strip of arches, each containing an upward pointing leaf. The shoulder is decorated with a stylised garland and a leaf strip runs along the handle. The cover has a radiating impression surrounding a flower shaped finial and a single vent hole. A narrow blue line marks the edges of the panels, handle and spout and an oval shape beneath the finial and there are blue touches on the finial flower. The handle, finial and semi-translucent body of this example confirm that it was not made by Dunderdale (see Cox). The peasant scene, probably taken from a contemporary print, is also to be found on C.1277 & A-1928. These two teapots may thus come from the same maker; they also have similarly modelled finials of a design which could perhaps link them to Chetham & Woolley. However, variations between different factories were often slight and popular sprig moulds were sometimes copied. The other scene has been variously identified as Flora, Cupid and Prudence or the marriage of Cupid & Psyche (Rachkam, Edwards Roussel)."},{"value":"The Castleford Pottery in Yorkshire, run by David Dunderdale & Co. from 1790 to1821, was renowned for its white felspathic stoneware, and thus teapots from this material have become known as \u2018Castleford-type teapots\u2019. However, other factories made similar wares, including Sowter & co of Mexborough in Yorkshire and Chetham & Woolley of Longton in Staffordshire. Examples are typically plain white or white with edges lined in blue or another colour, or black basalt. The smear-glazing makes the most of the crisply-moulded ornament, whilst the stoneware would be durable in an everyday setting. The teapots are moulded in two parts, with applied handle and sprig decoration, and may have a drop-in, sliding or hinged cover. The reliefs on this example have been identified as 'Sportive Love', 'Cupids with Torches', 'Jove with an Eagle', and 'The Power of Love'. All four are commonly found on wares by Chetham and Woolley, and the engine turning pattern around the lower part is also typically found on their products. Thus, although unmarked, the basin was probably made by Chetham and Woolley, of Commerce Street, Longton, Staffordshire. The factory, in the Lane End district of Longton, was close to that run by John and William Turner, later Turner, Glover & Simpson. The presence of similar reliefs on Turner wares suggests that the sprigs might have been bought in the Turner bancrupcy sale in 1806."},{"value":"James Chetham and Richard Woolley are credited with introducing this type of fine-grained, semi-translucent feldspathic stoneware, c.1795, and became a significant producer of teawares, jugs and vases in this new material.
