The designs usually have local or topical relevance and often allude to seafaring. Scott Brothers (also known as Scott\u2019s Pottery), founded in 1788, was one of the most important Sunderland producers of lustre transfer-print designs and had a substantial export market as well as domestic customers."},{"value":"The \u2018Crimea\u2019 transfer dates the jug to the time of the Crimean War, 1853-56. It was used by Scott Brothers on jugs, mugs and bowls, although the design is thought to have been bought from another pottery, known as \u2018Garrison\u2019, and was also used by Moore. Designs were frequently copied between potteries and the original copper printing plates changed hands when firms closed.  All three verses have been found on bowls made by Scott Brothers and by other Sunderland potteries such as Moore, Ball and another known as \u2018Garrison\u2019. The poem \u2018England, England\u2026\u2019 is the first of two verses by Richard Howitt, published in \u2018The Metropolitan Magazine\u2019 in 1852 and later in the author\u2019s collected poems. The first verse of the poem was also printed, alongside \u2018Crimea\u2019 and an image of a frigate, on a large jug exhibited at the Royal Naval Exhibition 1891 (cat. p.319-20, 2922).  Three of the four transfers used here (\u2018Crimea\u2019 , \u2018Farewell\u2019 and \u2018Return\u2019) are found on a pink-lustred punchbowl, marked \u2018SCOTT\u2019S \/ PARIS\u2019,  in the Fitzwilliam Collection (C.96-1997). The National Maritime Museum holds a Sunderland pink lustre jug, c.1854, of similar shape with the same \u2018Sailor\u2019s Farewell\u2019 and \u2018Crimea\u2019 transfers, though other aspects of the decoration are different (No. A contemporary account records that \u2018The Sailor\u2019s Farewell\u2019, hung on the wall when the sailor left shore, would be swapped for \u2018Return\u2019 when he came safely home."},{"value":"Sunderland potteries were particularly known for their use of thinly hand-painted lustre, together with hand-painted transfer-prints which feature designs, verses and mottos. The designs usually have local or topical relevance and often allude to seafaring. Scott Brothers (also known as Scott\u2019s Pottery), founded in 1788, was one of the most important Sunderland producers of lustre transfer-print designs and had a substantial export market as well as domestic customers."},{"value":"The \u2018Crimea\u2019 transfer dates the jug to the time of the Crimean War, 1853-56. It was used by Scott Brothers on jugs, mugs and bowls, although the design is thought to have been bought from another pottery, known as \u2018Garrison\u2019, and was also used by Moore. Designs were frequently copied between potteries and the original copper printing plates changed hands when firms closed.  Both this and the \u2018Sailor\u2019s Farewell\u2019 and \u2018Return\u2019 verses were used by other Sunderland potteries such as Moore, Ball and another known as \u2018Garrison\u2019. These three transfers are also found on a Sunderland jug in the Fitzwilliam Collection (C.1090-1928). Images of the Wear Bridge appeared on Sunderland pottery as early as 1793-6. The designs usually have local or topical relevance and here feature the main economic interests of the region - coal mining, agriculture, shipping and river transport \u2013 along with a major landmark, the Wear Bridge, first opened in August 1796. The image shows the bridge before rebuilding in 1858-59, and has been matched to transfers dated The writer Washington Irving records seeing a slightly varied version of the  rhyme \u2018This world\u2026\u2019, on an inn window, in \u2018Tales of a Traveller\u2019, 1824; it also appeared in the monthly journal \u2018The Nic-Nac\u2019 the same The ocean-going paddle-steamer is indicative of Newcastle\u2019s importance as a centre for shipbuilding, coal exports and trade."},{"value":"Sunderland and Tyneside  potteries were particularly known for their use of thinly hand-painted lustre together with images, verses and mottos, on domestic and commemorative  wares produced from around 1820 to 1840. The two regions and their various potteries often used the same designs and verses, which were transfer-printed then hand-painted with enamels or sometimes, as here, painted freehand. This jug displays features typical of jugs and mugs made in Newcastle-upon-Tyne potteries during the 1830s, which include: dark pink\/purple lustre; strong enamel colours, notably yellow, green and red\/brown; and borders of stylised green leaves. Smeared lustre also indicates Tyneside origin; the Sunderland potteries preferring the mottled finish, which was produced using oil or turpentine
