He was also a brilliant maiolica painter, whose work has been identified by comparison with five pieces of istoriato maiolica monogrammed or signed by him. Nicola painted in an exquisitely delicate manner, and was unusually imaginative in his adaptation of printed sources and in the creation of architectural and landscape backgrounds. His output of the 1520s, which includes several armorial services, is regarded as the acme of maiolica decoration."},{"value":"This exquisite dish formed part of a service which belonged to Isabella d'Este (1474-1539), widow of Francesco Gonzaga, fourth Marchese of Mantua (1466-1519). It was made between 1522 and 1525, and may have been the service given to Isabella probably in November 1524 by her daughter, Eleanora, Duchess of Urbino, who thought that she might like to use it in her villa at Porto near Mantua. Twenty-two dishes and one fragmentary dish are known, two decorated with biblical scenes and the rest with subjects from classical mythology or history. Each dish also bears the arms of Gonzaga impaling Este, and one or more of Isabella's imprese (a device or emblem) or her initials YS intertwined. On this dish the arms are surrounded by bianco sopra bianco decoration, and the rim is decorated with the story of Peleus and Thetis from Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book XI. Having found the sea goddess Thetis asleep on the shore, Peleus entreated her to make love, but she refused and escaped by transforming herself into different forms. After praying to the sea god Proteus for advice, Peleus successfully overcame the goddess's scruples and she conceived the ill-fated hero, Achilles. Nicola based the figures on a woodcut illustration in Giovanni dei Bonsignori's Ovidio methamorphoseos vulgare, Venice (Giovanni Rosso da Vercelli for Lucantonio Giunta), 1497 or a later edition. Two imprese are shown: `XXVII' sounding like vinti s\u00e8te, (you are defeated), and gold bars in a crucible, which Isabella's husband adopted in 1495 to signify his integrity after successfully withstanding an accusation of treachery."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-134567","uid":"adlib-term-134567","uuid":"cb330736-31a5-3937-b99b-30a434c36c22"},"summary_title":"1520s"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-10618","uid":"adlib-term-10618","uuid":"9ebc0ae1-8cf8-312b-832c-9cf44da02136"},"summary_title":"Renaissance"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-110708","uid":"adlib-term-110708","uuid":"ef038505-1555-3c61-b6e2-cadcedf6c42a"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"Italy"}],"summary_title":"Italy","type":"country"}]],"summary_title":"Urbino"}]}]},"materials":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-39575","uid":"adlib-term-39575","uuid":"cdf6707a-1eeb-3622-a26b-6e54f1f8d4ab"},"summary_title":"tin-glaze"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"3.9"}]},"multimedia":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-187308","uid":"adlib-media-187308","uuid":"4f5247e5-9bd4-331c-a823-07712f3034fc"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":1021},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":1024}]},"modified":1702926403667,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/mid_EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":499},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1702926403667,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":1021},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":1024}]},"modified":1702926403667,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa30\/preview_EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":249},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1702926403667,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"0","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-1839422729","source":"portfolio","uid":"portfolio-media-1839422729","uuid":"e48eb84d-6cf2-3eec-826f-91f082127699"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"portfolio\/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C\/432\/996\/large_EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":768},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":1024}]},"modified":1529198924000,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"portfolio\/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C\/432\/996\/mid_EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":375},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1529198924000,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"location":"EC.30-1938_201407_kly25_mas.tif","modified":1529198924000,"processed":true,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"portfolio\/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C\/432\/996\/preview_EC_30_1938_201407_kly25_mas.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":188},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1529198924000,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"zoom":{"format":"pyramid These inscriptions frequently used the specialised Latin vocabulary of published medical texts and \u2018books of secrets\u2019. Spouted jars were used for oils, syrups, or liquid infusions. This one is labelled: \u2018O[x]ymel composito\u2019 compound oxymel, a potion prepared by evaporating a mixture of clarified honey and vinegar until it formed a syrup. This sweet- and-sour concoction, known from ancient Roman sources, was used to treat asthma as well as conjunctivitis. The warming nature of the remedy is alluded to by the old man who points to a flaming brazier, an image often emblematic of Winter.\nThe jar and C.65-1927 belong to a group of at least 280 pharmacy of several different forms with closely related and very distinctive decoration. The ceramic historian, Bernard Rackham (1876-1964), named the type 'Orsini-Colonna' jars, because a large two-handled bottle in the British Museum is decorated with a bear embracing a column with the words 'ET SARRIMO boNI AMICI' (and we will be good friends), emblematic of a reconciliation between these rival Roman families. The Orsini jars might be more appropriate, as that family's arms appear on a two-handled vase in the Lehman collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and on a two-handled bottle in a private collection. However, as more jars became known, it became apparent that the contents labels were repeated two, three, four, or in two instances five times, indicating that there must have been several different sets. This is also supported by the use of Roman capitals for the labels on some jars, and Gothic lettering on others. \nIn the absence of firm evidence for their place of origin the jars used to be attributed to central Italian towns, including Deruta, Siena, Cafaggiolo, Faenza or Casteldurante. Their secure attribution to Castelli in the Abruzzi followed the retrieval of many similar fragments in an excavation there between 1980 and 1982. This revealed the waste tip on the hillside behind the house of Orazio Pompei (c. 1510-20 to after 1590), a member of a large and flourishing potting family in the town. The connection between Orazio and the jars is supported by the inscription 'OC\/OPVS\/ORATII' on a dragon-spouted ewer in the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche, Faenza, and by similarities between the female busts on the jars, and those on two maiolica panels attributed to him. The first, decorated with the Virgin and Child flanked by the letters 'ORO', presumably for Orazio, and the date '1551' was formerly situated at the entrance to his house. The second, decorated with the Annunciation, and dated '21.MAI\/1557' belongs to the comune of Chieti. Given Orazio's presumed date of birth, it seems unlikely that the pharmacy jars were made before about 1540 and judging by their similarities with the figures in the wall panels, production could have continued until the late 1550s. Vincenzo De Pompeis considered that this jar was probably made at the early end of the date range. Archaeological evidence recovered since 1975 indicates that it was probably introduced in Tuscany during the last third of the fourteenth century, as fragments found during excavations in Florence and nearby towns, such as Prato, Pistoia, and Montelupo, can be dated to the end of the century. Others have been found with fragments of Italo-Moresque type which suggests that relief-blue decoration continued until the 1460s.By the early fifteenth century it was well-established and in addition to two-handled jars, it was used on jugs, albarelli, ewers, and, more rarely, on dishes. It was also adopted in the Romagna, Lazio, and Umbria during the same period. It may be the blue referred to in two recipes, one for blue pigment for the decoration of maiolica, and the other for relief-blue 'in the Florentine manner' included in a MS now in the Library of the University of Bologna (MS 2861), and formerly in the convent of San Salvatore in Bologna. \nThe best-known examples of relief-blue decoration outside Italy are Tuscan two-handled storage jars. These have been attributed to Florence and Montelupo, and were probably made elsewhere, such as at Baccheretto. Typically they have borders creating a panel on each side which is occupied by a central motif surrounded by stylized oak foliage. The main motifs include heraldic and other animals, fleurs-de-lis, and mythical or human figures. Some jars, however, are decorated overall with foliage, scales, or undulating lines. These motifs appear to have been derived from local and Islamic art, including heraldry, woven textiles and ceramics. This is one of at least twenty-one 'oak leaf jars' whose handles bear the crutch emblem of the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence. The hospital's archives record the purchase of large numbers of jars for its pharmacy in 1427 from Maso and Miniato di Domenico. But it seems more likely that they were among about 1,000 ordered in 1431 from Giunta di Tugio, whose workshop was in the Oltrarno district of the ciity, because the record mentioned orciuoli (two handled jars) for the new pharmacy. The meaning of the two asterisks is uncertain. They may be the mark of a decorator, because one, two or three asterisks occur on other jars of this kind. An excavation in 1975 on the site of the Giunta di Tugio's workshop in Florence confirmed that maiolica with relief-blue decoration was made there and that an asterisk mark was used, and this was confirmed by a further excavation in 2015."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-129010","uid":"adlib-term-129010","uuid":"674154af-c0f1-32b3-87cb-985607daa8cb"},"summary_title":"15th Century, second quarter"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-10618","uid":"adlib-term-10618","uuid":"9ebc0ae1-8cf8-312b-832c-9cf44da02136"},"summary_title":"Renaissance"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106508","uid":"adlib-term-106508","uuid":"f7f1399b-d092-3a3d-8f96-c3aee3ad8fd5"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"Italy"}],"summary_title":"Italy","type":"country"},{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"Tuscany"}],"summary_title":"Tuscany","type":"region"}]],"summary_title":"Florence"}]}]},"materials":[{"note":[{"value":"most of rim and base unglazed"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-39575","uid":"adlib-term-39575","uuid":"cdf6707a-1eeb-3622-a26b-6e54f1f8d4ab"},"summary_title":"tin-glaze"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"20"}]},"multimedia":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-53284","uid":"adlib-media-53284","uuid":"faca1ea5-2e87-3b48-b0f6-14913ef9a450"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa19\/C_75_1961.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":760},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":702}]},"modified":1616286200198,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa19\/mid_C_75_1961.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":541},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1616286200198,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa19\/C_75_1961.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":760},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":702}]},"modified":1616286200198,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa19\/preview_C_75_1961.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":271},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1616286200198,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"0","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}}],"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-110759","uid":"adlib-term-110759","uuid":"c6bf6c5a-3fdd-3aa2-b2e9-0c0c31ea4a68"},"summary_title":"two-handled jar"}},{"value":"oak-leaf jar"}],"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"Sir Otto Beit (1865-1930); Sir Alfred Beit (1903-94); Sotheby's, 16 October 1942, Catalogue of important Italian majolica, the property of Sir Alfred Beit Bt, MP., lot 5; Louis C.G. Circular with a broad rim, and deep curved well, slightly convex in the middle.\nThe central medallion contains a landscape in which a stream of arrows speeds towards a young man who is bound to a stake, while a young woman is either tying him up or releasing him. The sides are decorated with bianco sopra bianco and orange Vs between rows of simulated beading. On the rim are grotesques reserved in a dark blue ground: four labels inscribed `1520', each flanked by cornucopiae and scrolls and surmounted by a winged putto's head, alternating with four grotesque masks, each flanked by dolphin scrolls and surmounted by a palmette. The rim is yellow.\nThe middle of the back is painted in blue with three concentric circles, crossed by two lines. One quarter contains a small circle, the other three an arrow pointing towards the centre. Radiating from the base are two rows of blue petals, the inner row transversely striped in blue and the outer in orange. The spaces between the petals are filled with blue transverse lines, and three narrow concentric blue bands encircle the edge."}],"exhibitions":[{"@link":{"catalogue":"no. 948
