Their forms were derived from Italian maiolica jars, and Emens was probably inspired by seeing Italian style examples made by Antwerp potters. This jar has a simple cylindrical form with a projecting rim which would have made it easy to tie on a cover. Other examples have gadrooning round the shoulder and lower part which imitated the decoration of Italian maiolica jars more closely. The elaborate frame comprising scrolls, strapwork, and architectural elements is typical of Mannerist style frames of the second half of the 16th century. The inscription on this jar is not associated with physical health, but a jar in the British Museum is inscribed in German, 'These contents will make the gentlemen and highnesses sing with praise, and restore the health of he sick'. Some jars may have been used for non-medical purposes, such as the ingredients of cosmetics. The background is coloured blue, except for the ellipses which are pale manganese-purple with blue centres, and all the rosettes are gilded. The foot is encircled by a blue horizontal band, and the neck by two. There is a pewter mount round the top of the handle, hinged to the cone-shaped thumb piece, and domed cover decorated with circles of gadrooning and beading."}],"identifier":[{"accession_number":"C.2039-1928","primary":true,"type":"accession number","value":"C.2039-1928"},{"priref":"76584","type":"priref","value":"76584"},{"source":"Glaisher MS Catalogue, vol.","type":"old object number","value":"3883"},{"type":"uri","uri":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/76584","value":"https:\/\/data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/id\/object\/76584"}],"institutions":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"legal":{"credit_line":"Dr J.
