This is one of a small group decorated with young women wearing elaborate parade helmets. The only dated example, of 1522, is in the Museo Civico, Pesaro. Inscribed `FAVSTINA', it differs from the rest of the group in having a border of bound leaves and fruits. The others are `DEIDAMIA' in the Kunstgewerbe\u00acmuseum, Berlin.`BRADAMANTE BEL' at the Ceramic Museum at S\u00e8vres, and later, and painted in a different style, `MARFISA' in the Museo Internationale delle Ceramiche at Faenza.                                                                       \nClosely related to Deidamia is a small group of dishes with girls wearing visor-like headdresses and a cloth snood enclosing their hair at the back of their head: `CARENDINA' in the Lehman collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, `TARSIA B [Bella]' in the Gambier\u00ac-Parry collec\u00action at the Courtauld Institute Galleries, London, and `PHILOMENA' in the Metropolitan Museum. The Fitzwilliam Museum's MARTA B' differs from all these in having an extremely long and slender neck, a zoomorphic helmet as opposed to one decorated with grotesque masks, wings or shell-like coils, and an arched name scroll instead of a coiling ribbon passing behind her shoulders. In this respect it resembles two dishes decorated with heads of men wearing Saracen-style helmets and having an arched scroll over their head bearing their name, 'CATELINA' and 'SANSONE'. The front is decorated with the Crossing of the Red Sea or Destruction of Pharaoh and his Army,which is described in the Bible, in Exodus, 14.21-31. The design was probably derived from the woodcut illustration headed `ESOD XIII' by Bernard Salomon in Damiano Maraffi, 'Figure del Vecchio Testamento con versi tos\u00accani', Lyon, 1554,the Italian edition of Claude Paradin, Quadrins historiques de la Bible, Lyon, 1553, or later editions which have similar, and additional woodcut illustrations. The dish was probably made in the workshop of Orazio Fontana (d. 1571) in Urbino, and may have been painted by him, or by Antonio Patanazzi (1515-87), who worked in close contact with him, and after his death succeeded him. It was formerly attributed to the workshop of Guido Durantino, the father of Orazio Fontana. \n                                                                                                                                                              \nThe putti or cherubs on the reverse are close in style to angels bearing Instru\u00acments of the Passion on the reverse of a standing dish decorated with the Cruci\u00acfixion after Bernard Salomon\u2019s woodcut in 'Figures du Nouveau Testament', Lyon, 1554, in the Gambier-Parry collection, at the Courtauld Gallery,  Somerset House, London  ( inv. no. O.1966.GP.90). There are also strong similarities between details on the front of that dish, such as the horse's head, and the depiction of costume, which suggest that they were decorated by the same painter. The backs of the two dishes are comparable to the back of one in Wisbech and Fenland Museum (1868.173), decorated with with angels holding musical instruments above clouds, but painted by a different hand on the front with 'Moses striking the Rock', possibly that of the painter of some of the dishes in the set bearing the arms of Guidobaldo II, duke of Urbino (1514-74) made as a gift for the Franciscan, Andrea da Volterra, which are usually attributed to the Fontana workshop.\nThe dish in the Courtauld Gallery has the number 148 on the foot in writing similar to two others in its collection, all of which came from the famous Stowe sale in 1848 , and had previously belonged to the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Sani (see 2020 and 2023) found that although the number on the Courtauld\u2019s Crucifixion dish does not match a number in the 1784 inventory of the Medici collection, its description, and those of the other two plates discussed above, correspond with nos. 451, 455 and 452 respectively decorated with \u2018The Crucifixion of the Redeemer\u2019, the \u2018Crossing of the Red Sea\u2019, and \u2018Moses that quench the thirst of the Israelites. It was one of eight Gonzaga devices pictured on tiles commissioned from Pesaro in 1493 by Giovanni Sforza on behalf of Marquis Francesco II Gonzaga (1466-1519) for his villa at Marmirolo. However, on their arrival at the Castel San Giorgio in Mantua on 1 June 1494, some of them were laid in the studiolo of his wife, Isabella d'Este (1474-1539). The project seems to have been undertaken partly for aesthetic reasons and partly as a measure to rid the room of mice which had been nesting under the floorboards. Apart from this, maiolica pavements were not very practical in domestic situations because their colourful designs were gradually worn away by people's feet. The back of this tile, like some of the others from this pavement, was scooped out to produce three concentric circles. This may have been done to speed the drying of the tiles before firing or to prevent them warping in the kiln.\nThe potter's name was not mentioned in the surviving corres\u00acpondence of 1493-4 concerning the tiles, but he may have been Antonio dei Fedeli of Pesaro, who was active in Pesaro between 1458 and 1509. On 7 May 1496 wrote to Isabella asking to be paid for tiles for which he had been prom\u00acised payment six months earlier. Presumably these were a differ\u00acent order but it seems likely that, having been satisfied with the tiles decorated with devices, Isabella would have extended her patronage to the same potter for another commission.\nThe other seven emblems on the tiles were  the arms of Gonzaga; a dove perching on a coiled and smoking fuse inscribed `VRAI AMOVR NESE CHANGE' (true love does not change); a sunburst interwoven by two ribbons inscribed `PER VND\/IXIR' (for a desire); a white doe below a scroll inscribed `BIDER GRAFT' (righteous power); a three-tiered island surmounted by a diamond and surrounded by smoking brands, inscribed on the lowest tier of the island in Greek `AMVMOC' (blame\u00acless); a muzzle over a ribbon inscribed `CAVTIVS' (more cautiously); and a steel gauntlet attached to a ribbon inscribed `BVENA FE NONES MVDABLE' (good faith is unchangeable). \nAfter her husband's death, Isabella moved to different apart\u00acments on the ground floor of the Corte Vecchia, and recreated her studiolo there. The first studiolo no longer exists and the subsequent history of the tiles is unknown until some, whether from there or from Marmirolo is not clear, were recorded in the collec\u00actions of Attilio Portioli of Mantua and Willelmo Braghirolli in 1878. Those now in the museum collec\u00actions were acquired after that date. They were produced throughout the first half of the sixteenth century, and lustred examples survive in great numbers. Very few can be dated, even approximately with certainty. One of the earliest, in the British Museum, is decorated on the boss with the arms of a Montefeltro Duke of Urbino and was presumably made before 1508 when Francesco della Rovere succeeded to the dukedom. another basin at the Mus\u00e9e de la Renaissance at Ecouen, bears the arms for one or other of the Medici Popes, Leo X (1513-21) or Clement VII (1523-34).\nMany of these basins are decor\u00acated in the centre with a woman demurely facing to right or left towards a flowering plant, surrounded by a selec\u00action of stock patterns on the sides and rim, such as mock gadroons, scales, pointed rays and sty\u00aclized plants, wreaths of formal flowers and geometrical motifs. On some basins the flowers in front of the girls resemble pinks, which, like carnations, were symbols of love, so it seems likely that these were betrothal or wedding gifts, although not necessarily so. In the late fourteenth century, Margherita, the wife of the merchant, Francesco Datini of Prato (d. 1410), was asked to take 'a bowl and an ewer, such as is customary to give to girls' to the birthday party of one of her friend's daughters. At that time the ewer and basin would almost certainly have been metal, but it seems probable that, if this custom persisted maiolica would have been acceptable. A maiolica basin in an Italian private collection has the girl's name GIROLEMA painted across the boss.\nIt is difficult to date these basins other than by matching the borders with datable pieces of other types, or by the costume of the girls in the central medallion, which, because of the conservatism of Deruta decorators, is probably not very accurate. Nevertheless, it seems significant that the Louvre's relief moulded basin dated 1546, and another undated in the Lehman collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, feature girls wearing a different style of dress and turban-like caps. This fashion can be seen in portraits of the 1520s, and on bella donna dishes of the 1530s and early 1540s.
