It may have been made in the factory of Enoch Wood and James Caldwell at Burslem. The theme of the group derives from a song, 'The Vicar and Moses' published in 1773 by Charles and Samuel Thomson in London. The earliest known illustration of 'The Vicar and Moses' appeared above the title and verses on a broadsheet attributed to Thomas Colley published in January 1782 by Hannah Humphrey, a London print shop owner. An example of the ballad is in the British Museum (inv. no. 1872,1012.4907). Although the print is a more cruelly anticlerical satire showing an immensely stout vicar and a wretchedly thin clerk holding a lantern, it was probably the inspiration for this Staffordshire group. Another print with differently represented characters appears as decoration on creamware jugs and mugs. It was published by Bowles & Carver after Robert Dighton (1752-1814) in 1785. (British Museum inv. 1935,0522.1.174) \n\nIn the song, the Vicar is called out to undertake the burial of a baby, which, as parish registers show, was an all too frequent occurrence in that era because of the high infant mortality rate. The satirist shows the vicar as a bon viveur, who forgetting his religious duties, and the sorrowing parents, has to be dragged out of the village inn where he has been drinking and smoking, to go to the churchyard to attend the burial. But on arrival, is too inebriated to read the service and the infant is interred without it. The theme reflects the high level of anti-clerical sentiment in the late 18th century.\n\nA probably earlier group on a lower base and with less garish colouring is in the Willett Collection in the Brighton Museum (Willett Collection no. 807), and one with a mound base similar in shape to the Fitzwilliam's is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. 298-1969)."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-134369","uid":"adlib-term-134369","uuid":"e802f29c-a259-3ff8-940a-81beac6a5913"},"summary_title":"19th Century, Early"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107437","uid":"adlib-term-107437","uuid":"96f4b0d1-fc11-39ff-ae91-1b23d888d479"},"summary_title":"George III"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-107658","uid":"adlib-term-107658","uuid":"824d3ecf-92c1-33aa-8d45-2f0239317270"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"England"}],"summary_title":"England","type":"country"}]],"summary_title":"Staffordshire"}]}]},"materials":[{"note":[{"value":"off-white"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-42861","uid":"adlib-term-42861","uuid":"5b368285-f1a8-3dcf-a5b2-637fd3c3956c"},"summary_title":"earthenware"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"23.2"},{"dimension":"Length","units":"cm","value":"18.6"}]},"multimedia":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-47531","uid":"adlib-media-47531","uuid":"b12f8097-c8ab-37de-b633-8daef419121e"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/C_917_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583646366,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/mid_C_917_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":649},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1742583646366,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/C_917_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583646366,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/preview_C_917_1928_281_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":325},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1742583646366,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"0","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"media-47532","uid":"adlib-media-47532","uuid":"3ea53d90-e52b-3828-aab6-aef80de35f31"},"processed":{"large":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/C_917_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583593236,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"mid":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/mid_C_917_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":649},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":500}]},"modified":1742583593236,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"original":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/C_917_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":740},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":570}]},"modified":1742583593236,"resizable":true,"type":"image"},"preview":{"format":"jpeg","location":"aa\/aa8\/preview_C_917_1928_282_29.jpg","location_is_relative":true,"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"height","units":"pixels","value":325},{"dimension":"width","units":"pixels","value":250}]},"modified":1742583593236,"resizable":true,"type":"image"}},"sort":"1","type":{"base":"media","type":"image"}}],"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-110220","uid":"adlib-term-110220","uuid":"e22d3544-a393-3f19-9be4-dc2632ca9942"},"summary_title":"figure group"}}],"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"Sotheby's, 12 March, 1909, lot 161; purchased for \u00a32.16s. by S. An example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, has the title impressed across the front of the pulpit (inv. no. 12.80.1), as does an example in the Fitzwilliam Museum (C.21-1929). Similar groups decorated in enamels, like this one, appeared from the early 1800s and versions were made throughout the century. Although these all feature the double pulpit and sleeping vicar, variations in quality and modelling show they were produced by different potters - the Fitzwilliam holds two such different versions \u2013 and there are also later copies in circulation. A different group with the same title was made by Enoch Wood, c.1790-1810, and shows the parish clerk leading the drunken vicar to the church. A satirical ballad, \u2018The Vicar and Moses\u2019, by George Alexander Stevens, published c. 1772, which tells of a drunken vicar assisted in his duties by his clerk, Moses, almost certainly influenced the production of both these groups. The double pulpit format here seems to be inspired by William Hogarth's engraving, \u2018The Sleeping Congregation\u2019, which shows the parson preaching while his clerk and the congregation sleep, first published in 1736.\n\nPearlware figures decorated with enamels and showing scenes from everyday life and topical events became popular in the early 19th Century. Early examples are often complex, with modelled and moulded parts and applied decoration; the backs, though flat, are decorated. However, by c.1835 these methods had largely given way to three-part press-moulding which enabled faster and cheaper production for a growing market."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106498","uid":"adlib-term-106498","uuid":"272179a1-524b-3f36-aab7-bf342ce484d6"},"summary_title":"19th Century,
